Worcester Polytechnic Institute

WPI is about 5,000 undergraduates on a compact hilltop campus on Institute Road in Worcester, Massachusetts, an hour west of Boston. The academic calendar is the thing to understand before anything else: instead of semesters, WPI runs four seven-week terms — A, B, C, and D — with students taking three courses at a time, plus two optional summer terms. That compression exists to make room for the WPI Plan, a project-based degree where the work that matters most is done in teams on real problems, culminating in the Interactive Qualifying Project and a senior Major Qualifying Project often sponsored by an actual company. First-years live together in the halls around the Quad, and students entering in fall 2026 or later are required to live on campus for two years.

What to wear in Worcester, month by month

This region runs from a humid late summer to a hard winter in about ten weeks. The mistake out-of-region families make is packing the whole year in August.

Move-in (Aug 16)	60–79°F	Warm and humid for a mid-August arrival, and no residence hall has air conditioning — a fan is the first thing to unpack, and the hill makes the carrying work.
Sept–Oct	41–71°F	New England fall doing exactly what it's supposed to. A term ends in mid-October, so the leaves turn right as the first round of finals lands.
Nov–Dec	23–47°F	Cold, gray, and increasingly snowy. B Term runs through to just before the holidays, so December here is a working month, not a winding-down one.
Jan–Feb	18–35°F	The hardest stretch: Worcester is one of the snowiest cities of its size in the country, campus sits up a hill, and C Term starts in the middle of it.
Mar–Apr	27–55°F	A slow thaw with snow still plausible in March, then a genuine spring by mid-April as D Term runs out toward May.

Plan the whole year around seven-week terms, because everything moves faster than you expect. WPI runs four terms a year with three courses each, which means a midterm arrives in week three and a final in week seven — a student who falls behind for ten days has lost a meaningful fraction of a course, and a family that plans a long trip mid-term is planning it badly. On the packing side, WPI is stricter than average about appliances: no air conditioners at all, a fridge cap of 4.3 cubic feet, and no toaster ovens, hot plates, or grills. Use the MicroFridge vendor WPI is affiliated with and have it delivered. And bring nothing oversized — WPI cannot store the furniture already in the room, so anything you add competes with what's already there.

WPI pairs a StarRez compatibility questionnaire with a set of genuinely social options — Roommate Meet & Greets, the First-Year Welcome Experience, and class Discord servers. Students who want a say in their roommate have real avenues here, which is not true everywhere. Encourage the honest questionnaire answers anyway; they're the fallback.

Housing assignment released
First-year housing assignments arrive in mid-July. That's the point to find out whether your student landed a Founders suite with its own bathroom or a corridor hall, and to coordinate with the roommate on the single fridge — 4.3 cubic feet or less — rather than arriving with two.

Before you ship
Get the campus mailbox number from Workday
Packages have to carry the campus mailbox number, which appears in the student's Workday portal. Mail is delivered to the Rubin Campus Center and picked up at Mail Services on the campus center lower level, open 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Shipping the heavy items ahead is smart at a school built on a hill.

Move-in day and orientation
First-year move-in is Sunday, August 16, 2026, with New Student Orientation running August 16–19. A Term starts shortly after, and it starts fast — seven weeks means the first problem sets land almost immediately, so leave the room genuinely set up rather than half-unpacked.

Where first-years live

First-year housing at WPI clusters around the Quad and includes Daniels, Founders, Institute, Messenger, Morgan, and Sanford Riley halls, along with the Stoddard Complex and the smaller Trowbridge and Wachusett houses. Housing assignments come out in mid-July. WPI runs an unusually social matching process beforehand — StarRez compatibility questionnaires plus Roommate Meet & Greets, the First-Year Welcome Experience, and class Discord servers — so students often know their roommate through a conversation rather than an algorithm. The residency requirement changed for this class: students entering WPI for the first time in fall 2026 or later must live in university housing for both their first and second years. None of the first-year halls are air conditioned.

Founders290 residents · the only first-year suites

The one suite-style option available to first-years, housing 290 students in singles, doubles, and triples grouped into suites — and critically, each suite has its own full bathroom rather than a corridor bathroom down the hall. For students who care about that distinction, it's the most requested building on campus.

MorganDining downstairs · The Wedge

Morgan has a dining facility on the first floor, which in a Massachusetts February is worth more than any other amenity on this list — meals without going outside. It also holds The Wedge, a gathering space students use for both studying and decompressing between the two.

InstituteCorridor-style · shared bedrooms

A traditional first-year building with a corridor layout and shared bedrooms — the classic hall-of-doors arrangement that throws a floor together whether they planned it or not. Named, like the university itself, for Institute Road.

Sanford RileyNamed for the Class of 1896

One of the older halls on the Quad, named in honor of R. Sanford Riley of the Class of 1896 for his long support of the Institute. Traditional first-year housing in the historic heart of campus, steps from Boynton Hall and the Quad.

Daniels, Messenger, Stoddard & the housesThe rest of first-year housing

Daniels and Messenger halls, the Stoddard Complex, and the smaller Trowbridge and Wachusett houses round out first-year placement. The houses are notably smaller than the main halls, which suits students who'd rather land in a group of dozens than a group of hundreds.

The campus mailbox number is required and lives in the student's Workday portal — find it before shipping anything. All mail and packages are delivered to the Rubin Campus Center, with pickup at Mail Services on the lower level, 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Four seven-week terms, not two semesters

WPI's academic year is four seven-week terms — A, B, C, and D — with three courses per term, plus two optional summer terms called E1 and E2. The compression is deliberate: taking three courses at a time rather than five clears space for the project work at the center of the WPI Plan. For a family, the consequences are concrete. Terms begin and end four times a year rather than twice, midterms land around week three, a week of illness is a much larger share of a course than it would be elsewhere, and there are more natural breakpoints for travel. Ask about the schedule in terms, not semesters — that is the language everyone on campus uses.

The WPI Plan means projects, not just classes

WPI's degree is built around open-ended team projects rather than coursework alone. First-years can opt into the Great Problems Seminar, a two-term course team-taught by faculty from different disciplines — a mechanical engineer and a philosopher, say — where teams take a piece of a large problem like water, food security, or public health and work toward a solution. Later comes the Interactive Qualifying Project, which sits deliberately at the boundary of science, technology, and society, and then the senior Major Qualifying Project, a capstone in the major that is frequently sponsored by a real company. It is worth understanding early, because it shapes what your student's résumé looks like by graduation.

Worcester's downtown is a short walk downhill, with restaurants, the DCU Center, and Polar Park, where the WooSox play. The city has a large student population across several colleges, and it shows in what's open late.

Boston & Union Station

Commuter rail runs from Worcester's Union Station straight into Boston in about an hour, which is how most students get to the city without a car. Logan is the main airport; Bradley in Connecticut is sometimes the cheaper option.

Worcester is a college city several times over, and its calendars collide. WPI shares the city with Holy Cross, Clark, Assumption, and WSU, so move-in weekends and graduations stack on top of each other and on top of whatever is at the DCU Center or Polar Park. Book as soon as you have dates, and remember WPI's mid-August move-in comes earlier than most of its neighbors'.
