West Virginia

WVU stacks up the hills of Morgantown above the Monongahela River, splits itself across two campuses linked by a driverless monorail from the 1970s, and sings 'Country Roads' — all 60,000 voices — after every home win. It's the flagship of a state that treats it like the pro team, because it is.

The one thing generic lists get wrong

What to wear in Morgantown, month by month

This region runs from a humid late summer to a hard winter in about ten weeks. The mistake out-of-region families make is packing the whole year in August.

Move-in (Aug)60–83°FWarm mountain-valley summer — pleasant mornings, sticky afternoons.
Sept–Oct45–72°FAppalachian fall is the show — the hills go full color by mid-October.
Nov–Dec28–48°FCold, gray, and often wet — real coat and waterproof shoes.
Jan–Feb22–42°FSnowy mountain winter; the hills make every walk a workout.
Mar–May42–70°FMud season into a green, gorgeous spring.
The flip: layers and a rain shell — mountain weather flips fast — plus a real coat and boots for winter. And break in good walking shoes; Morgantown does not do flat.

What West Virginia lets you bring

Bring it
  • Twin XL bedding (confirm your specific hall)
  • UL/ETL power strip with a built-in circuit breaker — not a bare extension cord
  • Damage-free wall hangings like Command strips — no nails or screws
  • Low-draw LED desk and task lamps
  • A fan, a reusable water bottle, and UL-listed electronics
Leave it home
  • Open-coil / open-flame cooking: toasters, toaster ovens, air fryers, hot plates, electric grills, sandwich makers
  • Candles, incense, wax warmers, and anything with an open flame
  • Halogen lamps
  • Extension cords without a breaker; outlet splitters and multi-plug adapters
  • Space heaters and personal A/C units (unless your school provides/approves them)
  • Hoverboards, e-scooters, e-bikes, and other e-mobility devices
  • Weapons of any kind — including decorative — and fireworks

These come from West Virginia's official housing pages and cover the essentials plus the genuinely local rules. Double-check the current official guidance before you buy — policies and renovations change every year.

Where you'll live at West Virginia

First-year halls

Freshmen live on campus across two neighborhoods: the Evansdale towers near the stadium and the traditional halls downtown. The PRT — WVU's automated people-mover — stitches the two campuses together in about eight minutes.

The TowersEvansdale classic

Four connected freshman towers — officially Bennett, Braxton, Brooke, and Lyon — with dining downstairs and the PRT next door.

Morgantown logistics, sorted

Hall desks receive letters and packages — the exact street line arrives with the room assignment. Students bring their ID to pick up.

The PRT is real

The Personal Rapid Transit — an automated mini-monorail built in the 1970s — shuttles students between the downtown and Evansdale campuses in about eight minutes. Students complain about it constantly and would riot if it ever left. Free with a student ID.

Country Roads

After every home win, the whole stadium sings 'Take Me Home, Country Roads' — John Denver himself played it at Mountaineer Field's 1980 opening. Do not plan your exit before the fourth quarter ends.
