Wesleyan
Wesleyan is a small, idiosyncratic liberal-arts university on a hilltop in Middletown, Connecticut, with a brownstone College Row, the grassy sweep of Foss Hill, and a lively Main Street right at the campus edge. First-years live close to the center in halls like Clark, Bennet, and the Butterfields, and arrive in early September — a move-in day Wesleyan warns is "usually very hot." Then comes a bright New England fall and a cold, snowy winter.
What to wear in Middletown, month by month
This region runs from a humid late summer to a hard winter in about ten weeks. The mistake out-of-region families make is packing the whole year in August.
| Move-in (early Sept) | 55–82°F | Warm and often hot and humid — Wesleyan itself says to expect heat. A fan for un-air-conditioned halls, and light clothes. |
| Sept–Oct | 40–72°F | Crisp air and classic New England foliage over Foss Hill. A jacket and a few sweaters. |
| Nov–Dec | 28–48°F | Cold and gray toward finals, with the first snow. A real winter coat and boots. |
| Jan–Feb | 18–38°F | Cold, snowy Connecticut winter. A heavy parka, gloves, and a hat. |
| Mar–May | 34–66°F | Mud season easing into a green, warming spring. Layers and a rain jacket. |
What Wesleyan lets you bring
- A box or tower fan — window and portable A/C units are banned and several halls aren't air-conditioned
- A warm winter coat, boots, gloves, and a hat for a real Connecticut winter
- A power strip with surge protection
- Twin XL bedding (confirm your specific hall)
- UL/ETL power strip with a built-in circuit breaker — not a bare extension cord
- Damage-free wall hangings like Command strips — no nails or screws
- Low-draw LED desk and task lamps
- A fan, a reusable water bottle, and UL-listed electronics
- Open-coil / open-flame cooking: toasters, toaster ovens, air fryers, hot plates, electric grills, sandwich makers
- Candles, incense, wax warmers, and anything with an open flame
- Halogen lamps
- Extension cords without a breaker; outlet splitters and multi-plug adapters
- Space heaters and personal A/C units (unless your school provides/approves them)
- Hoverboards, e-scooters, e-bikes, and other e-mobility devices
- Weapons of any kind — including decorative — and fireworks
- Window and portable air-conditioner units of any kind
- Hot plates, toasters, toaster ovens, rice cookers, and grills of any type
- Incense in all forms — sticks, cones, and pyramids
- Candles and any open flame

Where you'll live at Wesleyan
First-year residence halls
First-years live near the center of campus, a 5–10 minute walk from Foss Hill and Olin Library. Halls are co-ed (some with single-sex floors) and mix first-years with a few upper-class students. Air conditioning varies: Clark and Bennet are air-conditioned, while the older houses are not — and you can't add your own unit.
A renovated, energetic first-year hall with an atrium lobby, air conditioning, an elevator, a full kitchen, and bike storage.
An air-conditioned first-year hall beside Foss Hill, close to dining and Olin Library, with a big central lounge and community kitchen.
A self-contained community (A, B, and C) with the Summerfields dining option, a central courtyard, and a limited number of first-year singles.
Older halls near the center, including West College (WestCo), one of Wesleyan's well-known program-house communities.
Smaller first-year houses — 200 Church and the Writer's Block at 156 High Street — for a tighter-knit setting.
