University of California, Irvine
UC Irvine is a 1960s master-planned campus laid out as a ring around Aldrich Park, five miles from Newport Beach and ten minutes from John Wayne Airport, with about 30,000 undergraduates and an anteater for a mascot. Freshmen live in one of two communities — Mesa Court or Middle Earth, the latter with every hall named out of Tolkien — and the quarter system means move-in comes in late September, weeks after friends at semester schools. The one thing to know before you pack: neither community has air conditioning.
What to wear in Irvine, month by month
This corner of the country breaks every generic packing list. It is not about surviving cold — it is about staying dry through a long gray winter and a famously short, beautiful summer.

What University of California, Irvine lets you bring
- A fan. There is no air conditioning anywhere in Mesa Court or Middle Earth — not the classic halls, not the towers — and a late-September Santa Ana can push Irvine into the 90s
- A bike and a U-lock — Ring Road circles the campus and UCI is built around riding it
- A surge protector, kitchenware for the hall kitchen, and a flashlight with batteries
- An earthquake kit — UCI's own list asks for basic disaster-preparedness supplies, which is not a line most colleges write
- Renters insurance, sorted before you arrive — every housing resident is required to have a policy in place by move-in
- Twin XL bedding (confirm your specific hall)
- UL/ETL power strip with a built-in circuit breaker — not a bare extension cord
- Damage-free wall hangings like Command strips — no nails or screws
- Low-draw LED desk and task lamps
- A fan, a reusable water bottle, and UL-listed electronics
- Open-coil / open-flame cooking: toasters, toaster ovens, air fryers, hot plates, electric grills, sandwich makers
- Candles, incense, wax warmers, and anything with an open flame
- Halogen lamps
- Extension cords without a breaker; outlet splitters and multi-plug adapters
- Space heaters and personal A/C units (unless your school provides/approves them)
- Hoverboards, e-scooters, e-bikes, and other e-mobility devices
- Weapons of any kind — including decorative — and fireworks
- Standalone microwaves — only the microwave inside an approved MicroFridge combo is permitted in a room
- Electric cooking appliances in bedrooms — toasters, coffee pots, rice cookers, air fryers and the like are kitchen-only
- Space heaters, sun lamps, and halogen lamps without UL approval and a bulb shield
- Candles, incense, and any open flame — battery LED candles are the workaround
- Personal Wi-Fi routers, drones, and dry-erase or cork boards on interior or exterior doors
- E-scooters, hoverboards, and e-skateboards that don't meet the housing safety standards; vaping and tobacco anywhere (UCI is smoke- and tobacco-free); pets other than fish

Getting your room at University of California, Irvine

Submit your Statement of Intent to Register
The SIR has to be in before your student can even reach the housing application — accept the admission offer at least 24 hours before the housing deadline so Housing has the record.
- 02March 1 – May 15
Apply for housing — this is the deadline that matters
The freshman housing application opens March 1 at 8 a.m. and closes 11:59 p.m. Pacific on May 15, 2026. There's no application fee. Applying by that date is what makes a student eligible for two years of guaranteed on-campus housing, provided they live on campus the whole first year.

Contract offer, then preferences
Housing offers go out by email in mid-to-late May and continue while space lasts. Read the payment and fee deadlines carefully, then submit the Personal Information Form with the contract to give community, theme hall, and roommate preferences.

Buy renters insurance
Every UCI Housing resident is required to have a renters insurance policy in place before moving in — an unusual requirement, and one families routinely discover late.
- 05Early September
Assignment lands, then order the MicroFridge
Room and roommate assignments are emailed in early September along with move-in details, and MicroFridge rental ordering information goes out to residents in August. Move-in weekend falls mid-to-late September; fall instruction begins Thursday, September 24, 2026.
Where you'll live at University of California, Irvine
The two freshman communities
Freshmen live in Mesa Court or Middle Earth, both mostly first- and second-year students, both with a live-in Resident Advisor in every hall and a full-time Residential Life Coordinator on site. Each has classic low-rise halls arranged in suites plus newer mid-rise towers, its own dining commons, its own mailroom, and a slate of themed communities you rank with your housing contract. A meal plan is required in both. Neither has air conditioning.
The original freshman community on the west side of campus: 29 low-rise halls of single-gender suites, six rooms to a suite with shared bathrooms, a kitchen and living room per hall, laundry, and study rooms in many. About 2,044 beds. No A/C.
The newer four towers, holding 338 to 424 students each on mixed-gender floors, with paired rooms sharing a bathroom, study space on every floor, a great room with a kitchen, and laundry in each. The Anteatery dining commons and the Court study pavilion anchor the community. Still no A/C.
Every hall named out of Tolkien, arranged as suites of five to ten rooms with shared single-gender and gender-inclusive bathrooms, a kitchen and living room in each, and roughly 1,784 beds. Brandywine Dining Commons, the Arkenstone and Bucklebury 24/7 study lounges, and the Pippin recreation and fitness center are all here.
Middle Earth's mid-rise: five mixed-gender floors, paired rooms sharing a bathroom, study space on each floor, laundry on every floor, and the Link Lounge and kitchen tying the community together. The Nienna and Wellinghall study spaces are in the building.
Both communities run themed halls — art, music, technology, sustainability, outdoor adventure, and more — plus First Year Initiative programming on academics, involvement, and wellness. Preferences go on the Personal Information Form you submit with your housing contract.

The quarter system moves everything late
Irvine & around
Aldrich Park & Ring Road
The whole campus is a circle around a 19-acre park, with Ring Road looping past every school and the Student Center. It's the most legible campus plan in the UC system, and it means everything is a ten-minute walk or a five-minute ride from everything else.
Newport Beach & the coast
Newport, Corona del Mar, Crystal Cove, and the Balboa Peninsula are all within about five miles — close enough that a beach afternoon between classes is a normal Tuesday, not an expedition.
University Town Center & the Irvine Spectrum
UTC sits directly across from campus for groceries, food, and a movie; the Irvine Spectrum ten minutes south is the bigger shopping-and-restaurants destination. Disneyland is about half an hour north.
John Wayne Airport & the freeways
SNA is about ten minutes from campus — one of the shortest airport runs of any major university — with LAX an hour or so up the 405 when the fares are better. Freshmen generally do fine without a car; the Anteater Express shuttles and a bike cover campus and the surrounding city.

~5–10 minThe cluster along Von Karman and MacArthur — Marriott Irvine, Hyatt House, Hotel Irvine — puts you minutes from both the campus and the airport, which is the practical combination for a fly-in move-in.
SNA-area hotels
~10 minAtrium Hotel, Courtyard, and the rest by John Wayne — cheap shuttles, easy returns, and a short drive to Mesa Court and Middle Earth.
Newport Beach
~15 minIf you're making a weekend of it, the Newport Beach hotels are fifteen minutes away and put the family on the water — the version of move-in weekend that people fly out for.
