UChicago

The University of Chicago is an intense, tradition-rich research university in the Hyde Park neighborhood on Chicago's South Side, seven miles down the lakefront from the Loop. Life revolves around the House system: every first-year is sorted into one of 48 Houses spread across seven residence halls, from the neo-Gothic Burton-Judson Courts to the 15-story Woodlawn Residential Commons. Because UChicago runs on the quarter system, autumn quarter and move-in don't come until late September — Tuesday, September 22 in 2026 — so students arrive in mild early fall and stay through a genuinely cold, windy Chicago winter.

The one thing generic lists get wrong

What to wear in Chicago, month by month

This region runs from a humid late summer to a hard winter in about ten weeks. The mistake out-of-region families make is packing the whole year in August.

Move-in (late Sept)55–75°FMild, bright early fall along the lake — comfortable days and cooler evenings. Light layers, and a fan for the historic halls without A/C.
Oct–Nov40–66°FCrisp and quickly cooling, with gold leaves over the quads and the first raw, gray days by late November. A warm jacket and a sweater or two.
Dec–Jan20–36°FDeep Chicago winter — cold, often snowy, and the wind off Lake Michigan makes it bite. A serious parka, boots, gloves, and a hat are not optional.
Feb–Mar26–45°FStill cold and slushy, thawing slowly toward the end of winter quarter. Keep the heavy coat and waterproof boots.
Apr–Jun45–80°FA green, welcome spring on the quads that can swing from chilly to warm in a day. A rain jacket and layers into a hot early summer.
The flip: The quarter system means a late-September move-in when Chicago is still mild — and three of the historic halls (Burton-Judson, Snell-Hitchcock, and International House) have no air conditioning, so a fan earns its place for the first warm weeks. The bigger investment is winter: the cold sets in hard by December and the lakefront wind is real, so a genuine parka and waterproof boots matter more here than almost anywhere.

What UChicago lets you bring

Bring it
  • A box or tower fan — Burton-Judson, Snell-Hitchcock, and International House are the historic halls with no air conditioning
  • A heavy winter coat, waterproof boots, and warm gloves and a hat for a real Chicago winter off the lake
  • A UL-listed power strip with a built-in circuit breaker
  • Twin XL bedding (confirm your specific hall)
  • UL/ETL power strip with a built-in circuit breaker — not a bare extension cord
  • Damage-free wall hangings like Command strips — no nails or screws
  • Low-draw LED desk and task lamps
  • A fan, a reusable water bottle, and UL-listed electronics
Leave it home
  • Open-coil / open-flame cooking: toasters, toaster ovens, air fryers, hot plates, electric grills, sandwich makers
  • Candles, incense, wax warmers, and anything with an open flame
  • Halogen lamps
  • Extension cords without a breaker; outlet splitters and multi-plug adapters
  • Space heaters and personal A/C units (unless your school provides/approves them)
  • Hoverboards, e-scooters, e-bikes, and other e-mobility devices
  • Weapons of any kind — including decorative — and fireworks
  • A separate microwave if you also bring your own refrigerator — the room wiring only supports a combo MicroFridge
  • Window air-conditioning units — the non-A/C halls use fans instead
  • Candles and incense (except in designated common spaces for religious use), and any open flame
  • Halogen lamps and space heaters

These come from UChicago's official housing pages and cover the essentials plus the genuinely local rules. Double-check the current official guidance before you buy — policies and renovations change every year.

Before you can move in

Getting your room at UChicago

  1. 01
    Spring/Summer

    Submit the housing application

First- and second-years are required to live on campus. In the myHousing portal, complete the housing application and rank your residence-hall and House preferences and roommate questionnaire.

  2. 02
    Summer

Get your House, hall, room, and roommate

Over the summer you'll be assigned a House — and with it a residence hall, room, and roommate. The House becomes your home base for dining, events, and student staff support.

  3. 03
    Before arrival

Sort a fridge and pick a move-in slot

Decide between renting a MicroFridge from BedLoft or bringing a fridge under 4.0 cubic feet (but not a separate microwave too). Select your move-in appointment window and pack a fan if your hall isn't air-conditioned.

  4. 04
    Sept 22

    Move in for O-Week

New students move into the residence halls by appointment on Tuesday, September 22, 2026, and Orientation Week begins right away before autumn-quarter classes.

Where you'll live at UChicago

The House system

UChicago houses all first- and second-years on campus, and everyone lives in a House — a community of about 70 to 100 students from all four years, with its own lounge, House Council, table in a dining hall, and decades of traditions. You rank residence-hall and House preferences on the housing application; the 48 Houses sit inside seven very different residence halls. All halls are air-conditioned except the three oldest — Burton-Judson, Snell-Hitchcock, and International House.

Burton-Judson CourtsNeo-Gothic · no A/C

A castle-like neo-Gothic hall from 1931 just south of the Midway, with six Houses, courtyards, and wood-paneled common rooms — historic and beloved, but not air-conditioned.

Snell-HitchcockMain quad · no A/C

The oldest residence halls still in use, tucked into the main quadrangle in collegiate-Gothic stone with fireplaces and just two tight-knit Houses. No A/C.

Max Palevsky Residential CommonsMain quad · A/C

Ricardo Legorreta's colorful, modern 2001 complex right on the main quad, with eight Houses and easy access to the center of campus.

Campus North Residential CommonsCentral · A/C

Studio Gang's angular 2016 building on 55th Street with eight Houses, a dining hall, and a central location between the quad and the shops of the North side.

Renee Granville-Grossman (South Campus)South Campus · A/C

A large, modern 2009 hall south of the Midway on Ellis Avenue, with eight Houses across two connected sections and a dining commons.

Woodlawn Residential CommonsNewest · A/C

The newest and largest hall (opened 2020), a 15-story tower on 61st Street with eleven Houses, sweeping city and lake views, and a dining hall.

International HouseHistoric · no A/C

A 1932 landmark facing the Midway, a gift of John D. Rockefeller Jr., now home to undergraduate Houses in a globally minded community. Historic and not air-conditioned.

Chicago logistics, sorted

How to send a package to a UChicago student

[Student Full Name]
[Room #], [House Name]
[Residence Hall + street address]
Chicago, IL 60637
Each residence hall has its own street address, and mail must use your student's preferred name plus their hall address — the exact format for your building is shown in the myHousing portal. Packages are delivered to the hall, logged, and held at the front desk, and your student gets an email to come claim it. Note that nothing is forwarded after move-out, so time end-of-year shipments carefully.

Everything runs through your House

The House — not just the building — is the heart of social life at UChicago. Your student joins a group of 70 to 100 people across all four years, with a shared lounge, a reserved table in one of the dining halls, an in-House resident staff, and its own traditions and intramural teams. It's the single best thing to ask them about, and the reason first- and second-years are required to live on campus.

Getting downtown and around the cold

Hyde Park sits about seven miles south of downtown Chicago. The Metra Electric train reaches the Loop in roughly 15 minutes, and CTA buses (the #6, #171, and #172) circle campus and the neighborhood. Winter is the thing to plan for: the cold is serious and the wind off the lake makes it worse, so make sure the heavy coat and boots are packed and ready before Thanksgiving, not shipped for later.
