Texas Tech University
Texas Tech sits high and dry on the Llano Estacado — the flat, wide-open West Texas plains — in Lubbock, a real college town built around the school. The campus is unmistakable: the largest continuous collection of Spanish Renaissance architecture in the country, all tan stone and red-tile roofs, wrapped around Memorial Circle. This is Red Raider country, where 'Guns Up' is a greeting and the sky goes on forever. Every residence hall is air-conditioned, first-years live on campus, and the weather story is heat, sun, and wind — not humidity.
What to wear in Lubbock, month by month
The national lists assume everyone needs a winter coat. Here the real questions are heat, sun, and rain — plus clothes for buildings kept ice-cold against it.
| Move-in (late Aug) | 66–94°F | Hot, dry, and often windy — but the shade and low humidity make it easy, and every hall has A/C. Shorts and tees, sunglasses, sunscreen, and a light layer for the cool evening. |
| Sept–Oct | 50–84°F | Warm, sunny days and sharply cooler nights — big day-to-night swings are the High Plains norm. Layers you can peel off by afternoon. |
| Nov–Dec | 32–58°F | Cooling toward cold and windy, with the first freezes and maybe an ice day. A warm coat, gloves, and a hat. |
| Jan–Feb | 26–56°F | The coldest stretch — sunny but cold, with a biting wind chill and the occasional ice storm or light snow. A real wind-resistant coat. |
| Mar–May | 40–82°F | Warming fast — and the windiest, dustiest time of year, when spring dust storms roll across the plains. Sunglasses, allergy meds, and layers. |
What Texas Tech University lets you bring
- Sunglasses, sunscreen, and lip balm — the High Plains sun is intense and the air is dry all year
- Allergy medicine (and maybe a small air purifier) — Lubbock's spring wind kicks up serious dust storms
- A warm, wind-resistant coat and gloves — winters bring cold snaps, biting wind chill, and the occasional ice storm
- A mini-fridge and microwave, or a MicroFridge combo — a fan is optional since every hall is air-conditioned
- Twin XL bedding (confirm your specific hall)
- UL/ETL power strip with a built-in circuit breaker — not a bare extension cord
- Damage-free wall hangings like Command strips — no nails or screws
- Low-draw LED desk and task lamps
- A fan, a reusable water bottle, and UL-listed electronics
- Open-coil / open-flame cooking: toasters, toaster ovens, air fryers, hot plates, electric grills, sandwich makers
- Candles, incense, wax warmers, and anything with an open flame
- Halogen lamps
- Extension cords without a breaker; outlet splitters and multi-plug adapters
- Space heaters and personal A/C units (unless your school provides/approves them)
- Hoverboards, e-scooters, e-bikes, and other e-mobility devices
- Weapons of any kind — including decorative — and fireworks
- Candles, incense, halogen lamps, and anything with an open flame
- Hot plates, toaster ovens, and open-coil cookers outside the community kitchens
- Space heaters and personal A/C units — every hall is already air-conditioned
- Pets other than fish in a small tank (approved service/assistance animals aside)

Getting your room at Texas Tech University
- 01After you commit (spring)
Sign your housing contract
Once you're admitted and enrolled, complete the housing contract in the housing portal and pay the deposit. Do it early — your contract date sets your room-selection time, and the newer suite halls fill first.
- 02Spring
Self-select your room and roommate
When your selection window opens, choose your hall and room, request a roommate, and opt into a Learning Community if you want a themed floor tied to your interests or major.
- 03Summer
Reserve your Tech-In timeslot
Your assignment is confirmed over the summer, and every resident must reserve a Tech-In (move-in) timeslot by the late-July deadline — miss it and you risk forfeiting your assignment, so put it on the calendar.
- 04Late August
Tech-In on your timeslot
Main move-in ('Tech-In') runs across roughly August 21–24 on your reserved timeslot, with approved early arrivals starting August 15 and Red Raider Welcome events leading into the first day of class.
Where you'll live at Texas Tech University
Where first-years live
Texas Tech requires first-years (enrolled in more than six hours) to live in the residence halls, and you'll find everything from newer suites to classic community-bath corridors — all of them air-conditioned and smoke-free, with free unlimited laundry. You sign a housing contract and self-select a room by your assigned time; popular suite halls fill fast, and many halls anchor a themed Learning Community.
The sought-after newer suite halls with semi-private baths — Gordon in two-bedroom suites, Murray and Talkington in four-bedroom suites. Talkington (built in the 2010s) adds controlled access and nicer finishes. These go quickly, so pick your selection time early.
Pod-style living for Honors College students, with larger suites, community bathrooms, and contemporary amenities — steps from the Student Union, dining, and the freshman rec center. A tight-knit academic community from day one.
The classic corridor experience: doubles with shared floor bathrooms and lounges, often organized into Learning Communities. More affordable and famously social — where a lot of first-year friendships start.
Suite- and apartment-style options with semi-private baths and more independence, a bit removed from the traditional corridors — good for students who want more privacy and quiet.
