Stanford

Stanford spreads across a sunny, palm-lined campus in the heart of Silicon Valley. The Mediterranean climate means almost no real winter — bright dry days, cool nights, and rooms that rarely need A/C, so it's all about layers.

The one thing generic lists get wrong

What to wear in Stanford, month by month

The national lists assume everyone needs a winter coat. Here the real questions are heat, sun, and rain — plus clothes for buildings kept ice-cold against it.

Move-in (Sept)68–82°FWarm, dry days, cool nights. Tees and a light layer.
Oct–Nov60–75°FSunny and mild. Light layers, a jacket at night.
Dec–Feb48–62°FCooler, the rainy stretch. A real jacket and an umbrella.
Mar–Apr58–72°FMild, drying out. Back to light layers.
May–June65–80°FWarm and dry. Summer wardrobe, sun protection.
The move: forget the parka — it's all about layers for warm days and cool nights, plus a jacket and umbrella for the winter rains.

What Stanford lets you bring

Bring it
  • Twin XL bedding (confirm your specific hall)
  • UL/ETL power strip with a built-in circuit breaker — not a bare extension cord
  • Damage-free wall hangings like Command strips — no nails or screws
  • Low-draw LED desk and task lamps
  • A fan, a reusable water bottle, and UL-listed electronics
Leave it home
  • Open-coil / open-flame cooking: toasters, toaster ovens, air fryers, hot plates, electric grills, sandwich makers
  • Candles, incense, wax warmers, and anything with an open flame
  • Halogen lamps
  • Extension cords without a breaker; outlet splitters and multi-plug adapters
  • Space heaters and personal A/C units (unless your school provides/approves them)
  • Hoverboards, e-scooters, e-bikes, and other e-mobility devices
  • Weapons of any kind — including decorative — and fireworks

These come from Stanford's official housing pages and cover the essentials plus the genuinely local rules. Double-check the current official guidance before you buy — policies and renovations change every year.

Before you can move in

Getting your room at Stanford

  1. 01
    Summer, before arrival

    Submit your housing application

You'll complete a housing application and lifestyle questionnaire; Stanford assigns first-years to a dorm and neighborhood (you don't pick your building).

  2. 02
    Late summer

    Get your dorm assignment

Your residence, room, and roommate(s) are posted before move-in. New students can only receive packages after they move in — anything that arrives early is returned.

  3. 03
    Mid–late September

Move in for New Student Orientation

Stanford is on the quarter system, so move-in and orientation come in late September — weeks after most schools. Pack for warm days and cool nights.

Where you'll live at Stanford

Stanford's neighborhoods + first-year dorms

Stanford houses you in one of its residential neighborhoods, and most first-years land in a dedicated frosh or four-class dorm — you submit preferences, but the university assigns you. The campus is warm and Mediterranean, so rooms rarely need A/C; it's all about layers for cool evenings.

Wilbur & Stern HallsClassic frosh

Two big complexes (Wilbur: Cedro, Junipero, Okada, Otero, Rinconada, Soto, Trancos; Stern: Burbank, Donner, Larkin, Serra, Twain) that house a huge share of first-years — social, central, walkable to everything.

Roble, Branner & FloMoFirst-year favorites

Roble and Branner are stately historic dorms; Florence Moore ("FloMo") is another big first-year hub. The Freshman-Sophomore College (FroSoCo) is a smaller, academically-focused option.

Stanford logistics, sorted

How to send a package to a Stanford student

[Student Name] – [SUNet ID]
Stanford Warehouse
8424 Central Avenue
Newark, CA 94560
Packages are routed through the Stanford Warehouse, then to campus lockers / the Tresidder Package Center — always include the SUNet ID or delivery is delayed. New students can only receive packages after move-in; anything that arrives early is returned. (Letter mail uses a separate Tresidder address.)

A/C is rarely needed

Stanford's Mediterranean climate means most dorms don't have (or need) A/C — days are warm and dry, nights are cool. Pack layers, not a parka.
