Spelman College
Spelman College is the nation's most renowned historically Black college for women — a small, private liberal-arts college of about 2,100 students on a leafy 39-acre campus in Atlanta, founded in 1881. It's intimate by design, and living on campus is mandatory for first-year students, which makes the residence halls the true beginning of the sisterhood Spelman is known for. The campus sits inside the Atlanta University Center, the largest consortium of HBCUs in the country, alongside the men of Morehouse College and Clark Atlanta — students cross-register and share generations of traditions across the three schools. Add a location minutes from downtown Atlanta and a rail line to the rest of the city, and the first-year experience is a small, close community set inside a major American city.
What to wear in Atlanta, month by month
The national lists assume everyone needs a winter coat. Here the real questions are heat, sun, and rain — plus clothes for buildings kept ice-cold against it.

What Spelman College lets you bring
- A fan — air conditioning varies by hall (the renovated Abby and the Stewart LLC have central air; the older halls have window or other cooling), and Atlanta's August is hot and humid
- A surge protector, never an extension cord — two-prong extension cords and plug adapters are prohibited, and surge protectors are required

Apply for housing and clear your account
Living on campus is required for first-years, but the assignment still depends on paperwork: submit the housing application and contract and clear the student account balance by the late-March deadlines. Returning students go through a housing lottery; a cleared balance is what makes a first-year's assignment go through.

Learn your hall — especially its AC and lofting
The halls differ in ways that change your packing list. Abby and the Stewart LLC have central air; Howard-Harreld and Manley rely on window or other cooling, so plan on a fan there. And only Howard-Harreld and Manley allow lofting the bed — everywhere else, plan storage around a fixed bed height.

Shop the Spelman-compliant list
Buy Twin XL bedding, a compact micro-fridge sized to the room, a fan, and a surge protector — two-prong extension cords and plug adapters are prohibited. Leave the candles, halogen lamps, decorative string lights, space heaters, and personal Wi-Fi routers at home; all are banned. Plan for the required meal plan.

Move in for New Student Orientation
First-year students must take occupancy no later than the first day of New Student Orientation, which runs August 12–18, 2026, with fall classes beginning August 19. Arriving on time is a housing requirement — miss it without approved permission and the assignment can be forfeited.

Where first-years live
Spelman is small — about 2,100 women — and living on campus is mandatory for first-years, so the residence halls are the heart of the first-year experience and the beginning of the sisterhood the college is famous for. First-years live in Howard-Harreld, Manley, the recently renovated Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Hall, or the Stewart Living-Learning Center. Rooms are furnished per student with a Twin XL bed, dresser, closet, desk, and chair, and every on-campus student is required to carry a meal plan. Air conditioning varies by hall — Abby and the Stewart LLC have central air, while the older halls use window or other cooling — so a fan matters. Housing runs on a lottery for returning students, but first-years are assigned once the application and student account are settled by the March deadlines.
Built in 1968 and the largest first-year residence, housing about 184 students and named for Clara Howard and Claudia Harreld, members of Spelman's first high-school and college graduating classes. One of only two halls where students are allowed to loft their beds. (Spelman plans to eventually replace it as part of a new residence-hall project.)
Built in 1964, Manley houses about 131 residents in a range of single, double, triple, and quad rooms — the most varied room types of the first-year halls — and, like Howard-Harreld, is one of the two halls where lofting the bed is permitted.
Recently renovated with central air conditioning and upgraded amenities — the comfortable, modernized first-year option, and a welcome one in Atlanta's late-summer heat. Named for a longtime benefactor of the college.
A living-learning community that mixes first-years and upperclassmen around shared programming, and one of the two fully air-conditioned residence halls on campus. The option for a student who wants a built-in academic community alongside her hall.
