South Carolina

South Carolina sits right in the middle of Columbia, a big, social campus where Southern heat is the headline. Move-in is hot and humid, so AC matters (and it's there) — pack light layers, sun protection, and a rain jacket.

01
The one thing generic lists get wrong

What to wear in Columbia, month by month

The national lists assume everyone needs a winter coat. Here the real questions are heat, sun, and rain — plus clothes for buildings kept ice-cold against it.

Move-in (Aug)90–98°FIntense heat and humidity. Lightweight everything.
Sept–Oct72–88°FStill hot, easing slowly. Shorts and tees.
Nov–Dec45–65°FMild, cool nights. A jacket and sweaters.
Jan–Feb35–58°FShort, mild winter. One real coat.
Mar–May68–88°FWarm spring, storms. A rain jacket.
The flip: August is all about beating the heat — light layers, sun protection, a rain jacket, and a fan-free room since AC is provided.

What South Carolina lets you bring

Bring it
  • Twin XL bedding (confirm your specific hall)
  • UL/ETL power strip with a built-in circuit breaker — not a bare extension cord
  • Damage-free wall hangings like Command strips — no nails or screws
  • Low-draw LED desk and task lamps
  • A fan, a reusable water bottle, and UL-listed electronics
Leave it home
  • Open-coil / open-flame cooking: toasters, toaster ovens, air fryers, hot plates, electric grills, sandwich makers
  • Candles, incense, wax warmers, and anything with an open flame
  • Halogen lamps
  • Extension cords without a breaker; outlet splitters and multi-plug adapters
  • Space heaters and personal A/C units (unless your school provides/approves them)
  • Hoverboards, e-scooters, e-bikes, and other e-mobility devices
  • Weapons of any kind — including decorative — and fireworks
  • Personal A/C units — cooling is already provided

These come from South Carolina's official housing pages and cover the essentials plus the genuinely local rules. Double-check the current official guidance before you buy — policies and renovations change every year.

    Mid August

    Move in

Move-in is mid-August in serious heat and humidity; the halls are air-conditioned, so pack light, breathable clothes.

Where you'll live at South Carolina

First-year residence halls

Carolina houses most first-years on campus, and you rank communities when you apply. Options range from the big, social halls to living-learning communities (Green Quad for sustainability, Preston as a residential college) and the Honors Residence. Every hall is air-conditioned for the Columbia heat.

Green Quad, Preston & HonorsLiving-learning

Green Quad (sustainability), Preston (a residential college with live-in faculty), and the Honors Residence offer themed, tight-knit communities.
