Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute

Rensselaer is about 5,500 undergraduates in Troy, New York, and it is the oldest technological research university in the English-speaking world, founded in 1824. The campus sits on a steep hill above downtown Troy and the Hudson River — the terrain is not a scenic detail but a daily fact, from the climb up the Approach staircase to the ice that forms on it in January. The academic culture is engineering-heavy and genuinely demanding, every undergraduate is required to have a laptop, and Division I hockey at the Houston Field House is the thing that reliably fills a winter weekend. First-years live together on Freshman Hill, and students must live on campus for their first two years.

What to wear in Troy, month by month

This region runs from a humid late summer to a hard winter in about ten weeks. The mistake out-of-region families make is packing the whole year in August.

Move-in (mid–late Aug)	58–80°F	Warm and humid, and the halls have no air conditioning — which matters more here than elsewhere because move-in means carrying boxes up several flights without an elevator.

Nov–Dec	21–47°F	Cold sets in fast and the first real snow usually lands in November. Finals arrive in December alongside the darkest, coldest stretch of the semester.
Jan–Feb	16–35°F	Full upstate winter — roughly five feet of snow across the season, single-digit mornings, and a campus built on a slope that freezes. This is when the boots justify themselves.
Mar–Apr	26–59°F	A long grudging thaw with snow still possible into April, then a fast green spring over the Hudson by late in the month.

Rent or buy a hand truck before move-in day, and pack small. RPI provides no moving equipment of any kind, only one first-year hall — Barton — has an elevator, and the whole campus is on a hill. Families who show up with six enormous bins learn this the hard way. The shopping news is better than at most schools: microwaves are allowed and the refrigerator limit is a generous 6.0 cubic feet, so the standard setup works, as long as the fridge plugs straight into a wall outlet. The one purchase to think hardest about is the laptop, because it's required of every undergraduate — check RPI's Mobile Computing Program specifications for your student's major before buying, and know that Windows is the recommended operating system and that Mac users sometimes have to run Windows for coursework.

Course registration, then buy books
Registration runs July 10–16, and once the schedule exists your student can search and order course materials from the Rensselaer Collegiate Store using their RIN. Doing this before August beats doing it during the first week, when everyone else is doing it too.

Early–mid July
Building-specific move-in time windows released
RPI assigns move-in time windows by building and releases them in early to mid-July. Because parking is by designated lot and the buildings are on a hill, that window genuinely shapes the day — plan the drive and the hotel around it rather than the other way round.

Shipping opens
Students can begin shipping belongings to campus on August 1, 2026, addressed with the residence hall and room number. Shipping the heavy and bulky items ahead is the single best move-in decision available at this school, given the stairs and the lack of carts.

August 19 or 22
Move-in day — which one depends on orientation
First-years participating in an overnight trip move in Wednesday, August 19, 2026; those not participating move in Saturday, August 22. Athletics or ROTC commitments can change the date again, so confirm which applies before booking travel. On arrival your student picks up a room key, then everyone unloads at the curb, parks in the assigned lot, and carries up from there.

Sort the laptop
Every incoming Rensselaer undergraduate is required to have a laptop. Students don't have to buy through the Mobile Computing Program, but RPI strongly encourages matching the MCP model specifications for their program, recommends Windows, and warns Mac users they may need to partition for Windows to run required course software.

Where you'll live at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute

Where first-years live

First-years live on what everyone calls Freshman Hill, a cluster of traditional corridor halls named almost entirely for former Rensselaer professors: Barton, Bray, Cary, Crockett, Davison, Hall, Nason, Nugent, Sharp, and Warren, plus the Burdett Avenue Residence Hall (BARH) nearby. Students entering as first-years or sophomores are required to live on campus, so this is a two-year commitment rather than one. The practical differences between the buildings are less about amenities than about stairs and location — none of them have air conditioning, and Barton is the only one with an elevator. Detailed floor plans sit behind a student login, so families generally don't see room layouts until after the assignment.

Worth naming first for one purely practical reason: RPI states that Barton is the sole first-year residence hall with an elevator. On a campus where the institute supplies no dollies and every other building means carrying everything up by hand, that is the single most consequential difference between assignments on move-in morning.

The core of first-year housing: traditional corridor-style buildings clustered together at the top of the hill, all named for Rensselaer faculty — Bray taught biology, Cary geodesy, Crockett mathematics, Hall geology, Nason chemistry, Sharp civil engineering, and Warren descriptive geometry. Living here means the whole first-year class is within a few minutes of each other, which is much of the point.

Davison & NugentPaired first-year halls

Listed together in RPI's own housing comparison as Davison/Nugent, and named for Albert W. Davison, a professor of chemical engineering, and Homer H. Nugent, a professor of English. Same traditional corridor model as the rest of the Hill.

BARHBurdett Avenue Residence Hall

The Burdett Avenue Residence Hall, set slightly apart from the main Freshman Hill cluster on Burdett Avenue — the same street that gives RPI's shipping address. Also an option for first-year placement, and a slightly different feel from the tightly packed halls at the top of the hill.

The residence hall and room number both belong on the label, so nothing can be shipped until the assignment is out. Shipping opens August 1, 2026 — and at this school that date matters more than most, because anything that arrives by mail is something nobody has to carry up a stairwell on move-in day.

The hill, the stairs, and no dollies

RPI sits on a steep hill above downtown Troy, and the institute is explicit that it provides no moving apparatus — no handcarts, no dollies — and that only one first-year residence hall, Barton, has an elevator. Its own advice is to pack in multiple smaller boxes rather than a few large ones. Families should either bring a hand truck or ship ahead, and should expect the walk between campus and downtown to be a real climb in both directions, memorably so once it ices over. Every undergraduate needs a laptop

Rensselaer requires all incoming undergraduates to have a laptop. Participation in the Mobile Computing Program itself is optional, but students bringing their own machine are strongly encouraged to meet or beat the specifications of the current MCP models for their academic program — the requirements differ by major, and engineering and architecture software is demanding. RPI recommends Windows, and notes that Mac users may need to partition their machine to run Windows for certain course software. Check the year's MCP specification page before buying anything.

Downtown Troy & the Approach

Troy's downtown is a remarkably intact 19th-century commercial district at the bottom of the hill, with restaurants, the Troy Waterfront Farmers Market, and the Troy Savings Bank Music Hall. The Approach, a monumental stone staircase, is the direct route up — magnificent, and a workout.

The Curtis R. Priem Experimental Media and Performing Arts Center, a glass-and-wood hall built into the hillside with a concert theater and studios. It's the most striking building on campus and the clearest signal that RPI isn't only engineering.

Houston Field House

Home of RPI's Division I hockey and the center of winter social life, especially for the Big Red Freakout and the long-running rivalry with Union. Student tickets are part of the culture here.

Albany & ALB airport

Albany is across the Hudson, with Albany International Airport about half an hour away and the Albany-Rensselaer Amtrak station a short drive — one of the better rail connections of any school on this list, straight down to New York City.

Troy is a small city with a small hotel supply, and RPI shares it with Russell Sage and the state capital. Move-in, family weekend, commencement, and big hockey weekends all compete for the same handful of downtown rooms, and Albany events can absorb the overflow before you get to it. Book as soon as your move-in time window is confirmed in July.
