University of Rochester

The University of Rochester is a private research university on the River Campus, set along a bend of the Genesee River just south of downtown Rochester, New York. Mid-sized and research-driven, it's known for its open 'Rochester Curriculum' (no required general-education core — you build your own program through major-plus-clusters), and for optics, music, and a strong pre-med and engineering bent. First-years live together across two areas — the tower-style First-Year Hill and the traditional First-Year Quad — moving in during late August. Only one first-year hall (Genesee) is air-conditioned, and Rochester winters are famously long and snowy.

The one thing generic lists get wrong

What to wear in Rochester, month by month

This region runs from a humid late summer to a hard winter in about ten weeks. The mistake out-of-region families make is packing the whole year in August.

Move-in (late Aug)58–80°FWarm, sometimes humid late-summer days. Only Genesee Hall has A/C, so a fan is the most useful thing to pack for the other first-year halls.
Sept–Oct42–68°FCrisp air and a beautiful upstate fall along the Genesee. A light jacket and a few sweaters.
Nov–Dec28–44°FCold and gray fast, with lake-effect clouds and early snow off Lake Ontario. A warm coat, gloves, and waterproof boots before Thanksgiving.
Jan–Feb16–34°FA long, snowy winter — Rochester is among the snowiest cities in the U.S. A heavy parka, insulated waterproof boots, and traction are essentials.
Mar–May30–62°FA slow, snowy-to-muddy thaw into a green spring; Highland Park's lilacs bloom in May. Layers and a rain jacket.
The flip: air conditioning is the coin-flip here — only Genesee Hall is air-conditioned, so if you land in Susan B. Anthony, Gilbert, Hoeing, or Tiernan, a fan is the top thing to pack for a warm late-August move-in. A mini fridge and microwave are both fine (or a MicroFridge) — just plug each straight into the wall, since extension cords and power strips aren't allowed for them. Then plan for a real winter: Rochester is one of the snowiest cities in the country, so a genuine parka and waterproof boots matter. Mail goes to your CMC box number, not your hall.

What University of Rochester lets you bring

Bring it
  • A fan — only Genesee Hall is air-conditioned, so if you're in Sue B, Gilbert, Hoeing, or Tiernan you'll want one for the warm late-August start
  • Twin XL sheets — the beds are extra-long
  • A mini fridge and microwave (or a MicroFridge) — plug each straight into the wall, not a power strip
  • A serious winter coat, insulated waterproof boots, gloves, and a hat — Rochester is one of the snowiest cities in the country
  • A UL-listed surge protector for electronics (but not for the fridge or microwave), since extension cords aren't allowed
  • Twin XL bedding (confirm your specific hall)
  • UL/ETL power strip with a built-in circuit breaker — not a bare extension cord
  • Damage-free wall hangings like Command strips — no nails or screws
  • Low-draw LED desk and task lamps
  • A fan, a reusable water bottle, and UL-listed electronics
Leave it home
  • Open-coil / open-flame cooking: toasters, toaster ovens, air fryers, hot plates, electric grills, sandwich makers
  • Candles, incense, wax warmers, and anything with an open flame
  • Halogen lamps
  • Extension cords without a breaker; outlet splitters and multi-plug adapters
  • Space heaters and personal A/C units (unless your school provides/approves them)
  • Hoverboards, e-scooters, e-bikes, and other e-mobility devices
  • Weapons of any kind — including decorative — and fireworks
  • Lightweight extension cords and multi-plug outlet adapters — the fridge and microwave must go straight into the wall
  • Clip-on lamps and lamps with built-in outlets
  • Curtains, candles, incense, and halogen lamps
  • Space heaters and any open-coil cooking appliance
  • 3D printers, and pets other than fish in a tank of 5 gallons or less

These come from University of Rochester's official housing pages and cover the essentials plus the genuinely local rules. Double-check the current official guidance before you buy — policies and renovations change every year.

Where you'll live at University of Rochester

First-Year Hill & First-Year Quad

All first-years live together, split between two areas. The First-Year Hill (Susan B. Anthony Halls and Genesee Hall) is tower-style, near Rush Rhees Library, dining, and athletics. The First-Year Quad (Gilbert, Tiernan, Hoeing, and sometimes Lovejoy) sits on the traditional Residential Quad by Wilson Commons at the center of campus. Most rooms are doubles with upperclass mentors on the halls; you're assigned a building and roommate over the summer.

The traditional Residential Quad halls by Wilson Commons at the center of campus — classic corridor-style doubles, heated but not air-conditioned.

Lovejoy HallOverflow · larger classes

An additional Quad hall brought into first-year use in years with a larger incoming class.

How you're placedAssigned in early July

How to send a package to a Rochester student

[Student Full Name]
CMC Box [######]
University of Rochester
Rochester, NY 14627-[####]
Every student is assigned a Campus Mail Center (CMC) box number that stays the same until they graduate — it goes on the address line, and the last four digits repeat as the ZIP+4 suffix. Mail addressed to a residence hall won't be delivered; students get an email when a package is ready and pick it up at the CMC in Todd Union with their ID.

The open 'Rochester Curriculum'

Rochester is known for having no required general-education core: instead of distribution requirements, students choose a major plus two 'clusters' of their own outside their main division, so undergraduates design much of their own path. The university is also unusually strong in optics, biomedical engineering, and music — the Eastman School of Music, one of the world's best, is part of UR (downtown), and pre-med is a major draw given the adjacent Medical Center.

On the Genesee, just south of downtown

The River Campus sits along the Genesee River about two miles south of downtown Rochester, with the Olmsted-designed Genesee Valley Park and riverway trail right at its edge. UR's own Memorial Art Gallery and the George Eastman Museum of photography are close by, Highland Park (of Lilac Festival fame) is minutes away, and Lake Ontario is a short drive north.
