Purdue

Purdue packs Big Ten scale into a surprisingly walkable grid above the Wabash, all brick, boilerplate practicality, and train-whistle tradition. You'll move in through a humid Corn Belt August, and by Thanksgiving it's a real Indiana winter — so pack in two waves and skip the overloaded car.

01
The one thing generic lists get wrong

What to wear in West Lafayette, month by month

This region runs from a humid late summer to a hard winter in about ten weeks. The mistake out-of-region families make is packing the whole year in August.

Move-in (Aug)82–90°FHumid, corn-country heat. Light clothes, a fan if your hall lacks A/C.
Sept–Oct55–75°FWarm fading to crisp. Jeans, sweatshirts, a light jacket.
Nov–Dec25–45°FGray, windy, first snow. Real coat, hat, gloves.
Jan–Feb15–35°FFlat-land wind and snow. Heavy coat, boots, thermals.
Mar–May45–70°FWet, blustery spring warming late. A rain shell earns its keep.
The move: late-summer clothes for move-in and Boiler Gold Rush week, then bring the parka, boots, and thermals at fall break — Indiana winter arrives fast and stays.

What Purdue lets you bring

Bring it
  • Twin XL bedding (confirm your specific hall)
  • UL/ETL power strip with a built-in circuit breaker — not a bare extension cord
  • Damage-free wall hangings like Command strips — no nails or screws
  • Low-draw LED desk and task lamps
  • A fan, a reusable water bottle, and UL-listed electronics
Leave it home
  • Open-coil / open-flame cooking: toasters, toaster ovens, air fryers, hot plates, electric grills, sandwich makers
  • Candles, incense, wax warmers, and anything with an open flame
  • Halogen lamps
  • Extension cords without a breaker; outlet splitters and multi-plug adapters
  • Space heaters and personal A/C units (unless your school provides/approves them)
  • Hoverboards, e-scooters, e-bikes, and other e-mobility devices
  • Weapons of any kind — including decorative — and fireworks

These come from Purdue's official housing pages and cover the essentials plus the genuinely local rules. Double-check the current official guidance before you buy — policies and renovations change every year.

Before you can move in

Getting your room at Purdue

  1. 01
    After you deposit

    Sign the housing contract early

Apply through the Housing Portal as soon as you can — earlier contracts get earlier picks, which is the whole game for the newer halls.

  2. 02
    Spring–summer

    Preferences, roommate, assignment

Set hall preferences and match a roommate in the portal; assignments post over the summer along with your hall's mailing address.

  3. 03
    Mid August

    Boiler Gold Rush, then classes

Most freshmen sign up for BGR, Purdue's orientation week — which moves your move-in a few days earlier than the general window. August is hot; not every hall is air-conditioned, so pack a fan.

Where you'll live at Purdue

University Residences

Purdue doesn't technically require freshmen to live on campus, but nearly everyone does — and contract timing drives your pick. The halls run from 1930s quads to brand-new suites, and several have dining courts right downstairs.

Cary Quadrangle & Windsor HallsHistoric

Purdue's most storied addresses — Cary's sprawling brick quad on the north end and Windsor's five 1930s halls near the heart of campus. Character over polish.

Wiley · Earhart · Harrison · Shreve · Tarkington · McCutcheonThe classics

The mid-century workhorses west of the academic core. Wiley and Earhart have dining courts downstairs — and Earhart is named for Amelia, who counseled Purdue students in the 1930s.

Honors College & Residences · Meredith South · Parker HallsNewest · A/C

The modern suite-style wave — air-conditioned, bright, and the first to fill. Frieda and Winifred Parker Halls are the newest of the bunch.

The stuff nobody puts in one place

West Lafayette logistics, sorted

How to send a package to a Purdue student

[Student Full Name]
[Room #] [Residence Hall name]
[the hall's street address]
West Lafayette, IN [hall ZIP]
Each residence hall has its own street address — it comes with your summer assignment. Packages go to your hall's front desk or package room; bring your Purdue ID to pick up, and time shipments to land after you do.

BGR changes your dates

Boiler Gold Rush participants move in early, before the official window. Decide on BGR before you book travel — most freshmen do it, and it's the easiest friend-making week Purdue offers.

A/C varies by hall

The newest halls are air-conditioned; many classics aren't. A good fan is the single best cheap add to a Purdue packing list.
