Pitt

Pitt drops a big urban campus into the hills of Pittsburgh, blocks from museums, hospitals, and Oakland's student bustle. Expect a warm move-in and a gray, genuinely cold winter, so pack for both — and good shoes for the hills.

01
The one thing generic lists get wrong

What to wear in Pittsburgh, month by month

This region runs from a humid late summer to a hard winter in about ten weeks. The mistake out-of-region families make is packing the whole year in August.

Move-in (Aug)78–86°FWarm, humid. Tees and shorts, a fan.
Sept–Oct50–72°FCrisp fall, lots of gray. Layers and a jacket.
Nov–Dec32–48°FCold, gray, first snow. A real coat, hat, gloves.
Jan–Feb22–38°FCold, cloudy winter. Heavy coat, waterproof boots.
Mar–May45–70°FSlow thaw into spring. A jacket and layers.
The move: pack for a warm move-in, then layer up for a long gray winter — and bring genuinely good walking shoes for Pittsburgh's hills.

What Pitt lets you bring

Bring it
  • Twin XL bedding (confirm your specific hall)
  • UL/ETL power strip with a built-in circuit breaker — not a bare extension cord
  • Damage-free wall hangings like Command strips — no nails or screws
  • Low-draw LED desk and task lamps
  • A fan, a reusable water bottle, and UL-listed electronics
Leave it home
  • Open-coil / open-flame cooking: toasters, toaster ovens, air fryers, hot plates, electric grills, sandwich makers
  • Candles, incense, wax warmers, and anything with an open flame
  • Halogen lamps
  • Extension cords without a breaker; outlet splitters and multi-plug adapters
  • Space heaters and personal A/C units (unless your school provides/approves them)
  • Hoverboards, e-scooters, e-bikes, and other e-mobility devices
  • Weapons of any kind — including decorative — and fireworks

These come from Pitt's official housing pages and cover the essentials plus the genuinely local rules. Double-check the current official guidance before you buy — policies and renovations change every year.

The actual buildings

Where you'll live at Pitt

Where first-years live

Pitt's campus is woven into the Oakland neighborhood of Pittsburgh, and most first-years land in Litchfield Towers (the iconic round high-rises at the center of everything) or the Schenley Quad halls. You rank preferences when you apply; A/C varies by building.

Litchfield TowersIconic · central

The three round towers (A, B, C) over the Towers lobby and dining — the quintessential, most central first-year experience. Compact rooms, maximum convenience.

Schenley Quad & SutherlandClassic / upper campus

Historic Quad halls (Holland, McCormick, Brackenridge, Amos) sit at the heart of campus; Sutherland Hall up the hill is suite-style with great views (a longer walk or shuttle).
