Oregon
Oregon runs on the quarter system, so Ducks move in at the end of September — into crisp golden weather, a bike-everywhere college town, and a winter that's less about cold than about staying dry. TrackTown USA is green, laid-back, and unlike anywhere else on this site.
What to wear in Eugene, month by month
This corner of the country breaks every generic packing list. It is not about surviving cold — it is about staying dry through a long gray winter and a famously short, beautiful summer.
| Move-in (late Sept) | 55–75°F | Dry, golden, ideal. Tees plus a fleece for the evenings. |
| Oct–Nov | 45–60°F | The rain arrives — steady, soft, gray. Rain shell and waterproof shoes, not an umbrella. |
| Dec–Feb | 35–50°F | The long gray drizzle. Rarely freezing, rarely snowy — layers and dry feet win. |
| Mar–May | 45–65°F | Showers trading with sun; everything blooms absurdly. Keep the shell handy. |
| June | 60–75°F | Glorious Willamette Valley summer — right as the year ends. |
What Oregon lets you bring
- Twin XL bedding (confirm your specific hall)
- UL/ETL power strip with a built-in circuit breaker — not a bare extension cord
- Damage-free wall hangings like Command strips — no nails or screws
- Low-draw LED desk and task lamps
- A fan, a reusable water bottle, and UL-listed electronics
- Open-coil / open-flame cooking: toasters, toaster ovens, air fryers, hot plates, electric grills, sandwich makers
- Candles, incense, wax warmers, and anything with an open flame
- Halogen lamps
- Extension cords without a breaker; outlet splitters and multi-plug adapters
- Space heaters and personal A/C units (unless your school provides/approves them)
- Hoverboards, e-scooters, e-bikes, and other e-mobility devices
- Weapons of any kind — including decorative — and fireworks
These come from Oregon's official housing pages and cover the essentials plus the genuinely local rules. Double-check the current official guidance before you buy — policies and renovations change every year.
Getting your room at Oregon
- 01After you confirm
Apply + pick a community
Submit the housing application and browse the academic residential communities — grouping by interest is how Oregon builds its floors, and it shapes your year.
- 02Summer
Roommate + assignment
Match a roommate or go random; assignments post in late summer — remember everything runs a month later here than at semester schools.
- 03Late September
Move in (yes, September)
Week of Welcome runs just before the quarter starts in late September. You'll move in through crisp fall sunshine — and the rain holds off until roughly the third week of class.
Where you'll live at Oregon
First-year halls
First-years live on campus, and the halls run from striking new builds to friendly classics — many organized around academic residential communities that group you by interest. Move-in lands in late September, after nearly everyone else in the country.
Oregon's two newest halls — bright, modern, and named with intention: Kalapuya Ilihi honors the valley's first people, Unthank a pioneering Black Oregon architect.
The academic-community flagship — language immersion floors, scholars programs, and its own dining.
The traditional halls at the heart of campus — Carson sits closest to the historic quad, Bean got a full renovation.
