Oklahoma
OU is Norman — a college town twenty minutes south of Oklahoma City where fall Saturdays revolve around the Palace on the Prairie and 'Boomer Sooner' functions as a greeting. Freshmen live on campus in the towers, August is a blast furnace, and spring brings the most dramatic sky-watching in America.
What to wear in Norman, month by month
This region runs from a humid late summer to a hard winter in about ten weeks. The mistake out-of-region families make is packing the whole year in August.
| Move-in (Aug) | 74–96°F | Full Oklahoma summer — hot, windy, and bright. The towers are cooled. |
| Sept–Oct | 55–85°F | Hot easing into the state's best stretch — crisp mornings, golden evenings. |
| Nov–Dec | 32–56°F | Cold snaps arrive fast, sometimes with ice. A real coat by Thanksgiving. |
| Jan–Feb | 27–52°F | Short sharp winter — sunny one week, an ice storm the next. |
| Mar–May | 52–80°F | Storm season: towering skies, real thunderstorms, and sirens tested Saturdays at noon. |
What Oklahoma lets you bring
- Twin XL bedding (confirm your specific hall)
- UL/ETL power strip with a built-in circuit breaker — not a bare extension cord
- Damage-free wall hangings like Command strips — no nails or screws
- Low-draw LED desk and task lamps
- A fan, a reusable water bottle, and UL-listed electronics
- Open-coil / open-flame cooking: toasters, toaster ovens, air fryers, hot plates, electric grills, sandwich makers
- Candles, incense, wax warmers, and anything with an open flame
- Halogen lamps
- Extension cords without a breaker; outlet splitters and multi-plug adapters
- Space heaters and personal A/C units (unless your school provides/approves them)
- Hoverboards, e-scooters, e-bikes, and other e-mobility devices
- Weapons of any kind — including decorative — and fireworks
- Personal A/C units — the halls are cooled
These come from Oklahoma's official housing pages and cover the essentials plus the genuinely local rules. Double-check the current official guidance before you buy — policies and renovations change every year.

Where you'll live at Oklahoma
First-year halls
Freshmen live on campus, mostly in the three residence towers ringing Couch Restaurants — the all-you-care-to-eat hub. Themed living-learning floors shrink a 30,000-student campus fast, and Honors freshmen get their own hall.
OU's freshman trio — twelve-story towers around the dining hub. Couch is the social default; Walker and Adams run a notch calmer.
Honors College freshmen get a smaller, quieter hall right on the South Oval, steps from class.
Engineering, arts, global-community, and more — themed floors inside the towers with built-in study groups.
