Oberlin College
Oberlin is about 2,900 students in a small town in northeast Ohio, roughly thirty-five minutes southwest of Cleveland, and it is really two schools sharing one campus: the College of Arts and Sciences and the Conservatory of Music, with a five-year double-degree program joining them. That means a campus where a serious share of your student's neighbors are practicing musicians, and where Finney Chapel and the Allen Memorial Art Museum are ordinary parts of a walk to class. Oberlin requires students to live in college housing or an OSCA co-op all four years, so this is a place where residential life is the whole life. First-years live together in five FYRE halls, and the calendar includes a January Winter Term project month that most families don't see coming.
What to wear in Oberlin, month by month
This region runs from a humid late summer to a hard winter in about ten weeks. The mistake out-of-region families make is packing the whole year in August.

What Oberlin College lets you bring
- A warm comforter and layers for a 62-degree building — that's the winter set point Oberlin publishes, and the halls are old
- Rain gear and real winter boots — Oberlin sits about ten miles south of Lake Erie and gets the gray, damp end of northeast Ohio weather
- A desk lamp and a power strip with surge protection, since the wiring is old enough that the college bans microwaves over it
- An instrument, a stand, and headphones if your student is in the Conservatory or plays at all — a large share of campus does, and Burton has three practice rooms in the building
- A bike — the campus and town are flat and compact, and it's the normal way to get across Oberlin
- Twin XL bedding (confirm your specific hall)
- UL/ETL power strip with a built-in circuit breaker — not a bare extension cord
- Damage-free wall hangings like Command strips — no nails or screws
- Low-draw LED desk and task lamps
- A fan, a reusable water bottle, and UL-listed electronics
- Open-coil / open-flame cooking: toasters, toaster ovens, air fryers, hot plates, electric grills, sandwich makers
- Candles, incense, wax warmers, and anything with an open flame
- Halogen lamps
- Extension cords without a breaker; outlet splitters and multi-plug adapters
- Space heaters and personal A/C units (unless your school provides/approves them)
- Hoverboards, e-scooters, e-bikes, and other e-mobility devices
- Weapons of any kind — including decorative — and fireworks
- Microwaves of any kind — prohibited outright over voltage concerns in the halls; rent the Bedloft MicroFridge instead
- Personal air conditioners — students may not bring or install one, and cooling for a medical need goes through the Office of Disability and Access
- Hot plates and cooking appliances, which aren't permitted in any on-campus housing — use the floor kitchen
- Candles and fireworks — fireworks will get a student removed from college property immediately
- Electric blankets, and anything that tampers with smoke detectors or fire equipment
- Cigarettes and vapes anywhere on campus — Oberlin is tobacco-free indoors and outdoors, including lawns and sidewalks

Housing registration opens in StarRez
Oberlin opens first-year housing registration on January 23, 2026 through the StarRez portal. It's where your student sets building preferences, applies to a Living Learning Community if they want one, and requests a roommate by name or email. There's no rush on day one, but it's the front door to everything that follows.

Disability accommodation requests are due
If your student needs a housing accommodation — including air conditioning for a medical reason, since personal units are banned — the request goes through the Office of Disability and Access by May 1, 2026. Those assignments are sent out in June, ahead of the general lottery. Start this early; it is the one deadline with no flexibility behind it.

Registration and LLC applications close
June 1 is the hard deadline to complete housing registration and to apply to a Living Learning Community. Miss it and your student can't take part in the processes that follow. Requested roommates have to accept each other for a pairing to count, so confirm both sides before the date.

LLC selection, then the first-year lottery
LLC lottery times go out June 5 and those spaces are chosen June 10. Everyone not already placed gets a random lottery time on June 12 and selects on June 17. It's a lottery, so preferences help but nothing is guaranteed — go in with two or three halls your student would be happy in.

First-year move-in day
First-year students move in Friday, August 21, 2026; new international students arrive August 17 and returning students come back August 24–25. Label boxes with a name and hall before you leave home, and plan the drive around a small town that absorbs an entire class in one morning.
Where you'll live at Oberlin College
Where first-years live
For 2026–27 the First Year Residential Experience is housed in Barrows, Burton, Dascomb, Kahn, and South. Housing registration opens January 23, 2026 in the StarRez portal and closes June 1 — it asks for building preferences, lets students apply to a Living Learning Community, and lets them request a specific roommate by name or email, which that person has to accept. Most first-year rooms are doubles. Students who aren't placed through an accommodation, an exemption, or an LLC go into the First-Year Housing Lottery, with random lottery times sent June 12 and selection on June 17. A limited number of LLC spots are open to first-years by lottery: Afrikan Heritage House, the BA+BFA Community, Roots in STEM, and Sustainability Hall. Oberlin requires all four years on campus or in an OSCA co-op unless a student is granted an exemption.
The biggest residence on campus, three floors with four wings each, including an all-female wing. Its size is the point — the odds of finding your people are simply higher, and it carries a large share of the first-year class.
A three-story hall at 194 N. Professor Street with vaulted ceilings, big windows, and no cinderblock, which residents tend to bring up unprompted. It has study lounges, laundry, three music practice rooms in the building, and the basement offices of the Oberlin Review and The Grape.
The first-year hall for center and south campus at 140 W. College Street, with singles and doubles and an all-female wing, looking out over Wilder Bowl. Campus Safety and the Student Health and Counseling Center are in the north side of the same building, and six RAs live in.
One of the newest halls, at 169 N. Professor Street, home to the Sustainability Hall community — students apply and commit to environmental practices to live here. Windows are interlocked to cut the heat and air conditioning when opened, wings show real-time energy and water use, and the basement holds a game room, a gym, and a dance studio.
A three-story hall at 145 Woodland Street with a kitchen and lounge on every floor, sitting between Phillips gym and Wilder Student Union with the Science Center across the North Quad. Smaller and more tight-knit than South.

Tappan Square & downtown Oberlin
The thirteen-acre square is the middle of both the town and the campus, and downtown Oberlin wraps around it — a few blocks of restaurants, the Apollo Theatre, and coffee. It is a small town, and that is the trade: everything is a five-minute walk, and there is no fallback if you forget something.
Allen Memorial Art Museum
One of the best college art museums in the country, free and open to the public, with a collection that runs from Old Masters to modern work. Students genuinely use it, and there's a long-running program that lets them rent an original artwork for their dorm room.
The Conservatory & Finney Chapel
The Conservatory of Music puts hundreds of concerts a year on campus, most of them free. Finney Chapel is the big hall; between it and Warner Concert Hall, live music is the default background of a semester here.
Cleveland & CLE airport
Cleveland is about thirty-five minutes northeast, and Cleveland Hopkins is the airport everyone flies through — close enough for an easy pickup, far enough that most students stay put during the term.

The Hotel at Oberlin
StepsThe college's own hotel, across Tappan Square from campus — 70 rooms and suites, the 1833 restaurant downstairs, and a LEED Platinum building. It is the obvious choice and therefore the first one gone.
Elyria & Amherst
~15–20 minThe nearest cluster of ordinary chain hotels sits northeast toward Elyria — a Courtyard by Marriott and a Holiday Inn Express among them — plus a few options in Amherst. Fifteen minutes of driving for a much easier booking.
Cleveland & near CLE airport
~35 minThe full metro supply, and the right answer if you're flying in anyway or booked late. A straight shot down I-480 and the Ohio Turnpike.
