Middlebury

Middlebury owns its own ski mountain, sits between the Green Mountains and the Adirondacks, and anchors the prettiest small town in Vermont — a marble-and-stone campus where the falls of Otter Creek run right through downtown. It's the outdoors-forward NESCAC, and it wears winter like a varsity letter.

The one thing generic lists get wrong

What to wear in Middlebury, month by month

This region runs from a humid late summer to a hard winter in about ten weeks. The mistake out-of-region families make is packing the whole year in August.

Move-in (Sept)50–75°FGolden Vermont early fall — warm afternoons, cold nights, cider season starting.
Sept–Oct36–65°FPeak foliage with the Greens on one horizon and the Adirondacks on the other.
Nov–Dec18–38°FReal Vermont winter arrives in November. Full kit, no negotiating.
Jan–Feb8–30°FDeep freeze — but campus leans in: ski days, pond hockey, and the Snow Bowl running.
Mar–May30–60°FMud season (a genuine Vermont season), then an explosive green spring.
The flip: this is the coldest campus in our lineup — invest in a real parka, insulated boots, and wool everything. Then add ski gear or rent it; the college mountain makes winter the fun semester.

What Middlebury lets you bring

Bring it
  • A fan — most halls here have no A/C and the first two weeks are the warm ones
  • Twin XL bedding (confirm your specific hall)
  • UL/ETL power strip with a built-in circuit breaker — not a bare extension cord
  • Damage-free wall hangings like Command strips — no nails or screws
  • Low-draw LED desk and task lamps
  • A fan, a reusable water bottle, and UL-listed electronics
Leave it home
  • Open-coil / open-flame cooking: toasters, toaster ovens, air fryers, hot plates, electric grills, sandwich makers
  • Candles, incense, wax warmers, and anything with an open flame
  • Halogen lamps
  • Extension cords without a breaker; outlet splitters and multi-plug adapters
  • Space heaters and personal A/C units (unless your school provides/approves them)
  • Hoverboards, e-scooters, e-bikes, and other e-mobility devices
  • Weapons of any kind — including decorative — and fireworks

These come from Middlebury's official housing pages and cover the essentials plus the genuinely local rules. Double-check the current official guidance before you buy — policies and renovations change every year.

The college owns a ski mountain

The Middlebury Snow Bowl (alpine) and Rikert Outdoor Center (Nordic) belong to the college — students ski cheap, intramurals go snowbound, and February graduates traditionally ski down through the graduation arch. Yes, really.

Quidditch started here

College quidditch — brooms, hoops, the lot — was invented on Battell Beach in 2005 and spread to hundreds of campuses worldwide. The sport's now called quadball, and Midd remains its Cooperstown.
