Miami (UM)

The University of Miami sits in leafy Coral Gables, a tropical campus wrapped around Lake Osceola with palm trees, year-round sun, and "the U" everywhere you look. First-years live in residential colleges — most in the brand-new Centennial Village, plus historic Eaton — and move in during mid-August, deep in the heat, humidity, and hurricane season. Pack for storms and sunshine, and expect the city and the water to be part of the experience.

The one thing generic lists get wrong

What to wear in Coral Gables, month by month

The national lists assume everyone needs a winter coat. Here the real questions are heat, sun, and rain — plus clothes for buildings kept ice-cold against it.

Move-in (Aug)78–90°FHot, humid, and stormy — daily downpours and hurricane season. Light clothes and a strong umbrella.
Sept–Oct76–89°FStill hot and wet; peak hurricane season into October. Shorts, tees, and a rain shell.
Nov–Dec65–82°FThe gorgeous dry season arrives — warm days, comfortable nights. Light layers.
Jan–Feb60–78°FMild, pleasant winter with the rare cool snap. A light jacket is plenty.
Mar–May70–88°FWarming and greening as humidity builds back toward summer. Shorts and sunscreen.
The flip: Move-in lands in peak heat and hurricane season, so pack light, breathable clothes, a real umbrella, and copies of important documents. Note beds don't loft here — plan storage around 24-inch risers — and if you're in Centennial Village or Eaton, Cruise Ship Move-In hauls your carload to the room for you.

What Miami (UM) lets you bring

Bring it
  • Sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat for strong year-round sun
  • A rain jacket and umbrella — daily afternoon storms in the wet season
  • Bed risers (up to 24 inches) for under-bed storage, since beds don't loft
  • Twin XL bedding (confirm your specific hall)
  • UL/ETL power strip with a built-in circuit breaker — not a bare extension cord
  • Damage-free wall hangings like Command strips — no nails or screws
  • Low-draw LED desk and task lamps
  • A fan, a reusable water bottle, and UL-listed electronics
Leave it home
  • Open-coil / open-flame cooking: toasters, toaster ovens, air fryers, hot plates, electric grills, sandwich makers
  • Candles, incense, wax warmers, and anything with an open flame
  • Halogen lamps
  • Extension cords without a breaker; outlet splitters and multi-plug adapters
  • Space heaters and personal A/C units (unless your school provides/approves them)
  • Hoverboards, e-scooters, e-bikes, and other e-mobility devices
  • Weapons of any kind — including decorative — and fireworks
  • Candles, incense, hookahs, and any open flame
  • Grills and appliances with an open heating element (e.g. George Foreman grills)
  • Personal electric vehicles — e-scooters, e-bikes, and hoverboards
  • Extension cords, and personal air-conditioner units (every hall is already cooled)

These come from Miami (UM)'s official housing pages and cover the essentials plus the genuinely local rules. Double-check the current official guidance before you buy — policies and renovations change every year.

The stuff nobody puts in one place

Coral Gables logistics, sorted

How to send a package to a UM student

[Student Full Name]
[Residential College] — Room [###]
1231 Dickinson Drive
Coral Gables, FL 33146
Address packages to your student's residential college and room number. The Centennial Village colleges share 1231 Dickinson Drive; Eaton Residential College is 1211 Dickinson Drive. Confirm the exact building address in the Guide to Living on Campus once your assignment arrives, and pick up packages at the residential college.

Beds don't loft — and Cruise Ship Move-In

UM ended its BedLoft partnership, so you can't loft your bed; plan under-bed storage around bed risers up to 24 inches. On the plus side, first-years in Centennial Village and Eaton get Cruise Ship Move-In — staff carry everything from your car to your room, so you don't haul it yourself.

The two-semester rule and no PEVs

Non-local first-years must live on campus for their first two semesters (students living with parents in Miami-Dade or Broward are exempt). Note the banned list: candles, hookahs, grills, extension cords, and personal electric vehicles like e-scooters, e-bikes, and hoverboards are all prohibited in the halls.
