Miami (UM)
The University of Miami sits in leafy Coral Gables, a tropical campus wrapped around Lake Osceola with palm trees, year-round sun, and "the U" everywhere you look. First-years live in residential colleges — most in the brand-new Centennial Village, plus historic Eaton — and move in during mid-August, deep in the heat, humidity, and hurricane season. Pack for storms and sunshine, and expect the city and the water to be part of the experience.
What to wear in Coral Gables, month by month
The national lists assume everyone needs a winter coat. Here the real questions are heat, sun, and rain — plus clothes for buildings kept ice-cold against it.
| Move-in (Aug) | 78–90°F | Hot, humid, and stormy — daily downpours and hurricane season. Light clothes and a strong umbrella. |
| Sept–Oct | 76–89°F | Still hot and wet; peak hurricane season into October. Shorts, tees, and a rain shell. |
| Nov–Dec | 65–82°F | The gorgeous dry season arrives — warm days, comfortable nights. Light layers. |
| Jan–Feb | 60–78°F | Mild, pleasant winter with the rare cool snap. A light jacket is plenty. |
| Mar–May | 70–88°F | Warming and greening as humidity builds back toward summer. Shorts and sunscreen. |
What Miami (UM) lets you bring
- Sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat for strong year-round sun
- A rain jacket and umbrella — daily afternoon storms in the wet season
- Bed risers (up to 24 inches) for under-bed storage, since beds don't loft
- Twin XL bedding (confirm your specific hall)
- UL/ETL power strip with a built-in circuit breaker — not a bare extension cord
- Damage-free wall hangings like Command strips — no nails or screws
- Low-draw LED desk and task lamps
- A fan, a reusable water bottle, and UL-listed electronics
- Open-coil / open-flame cooking: toasters, toaster ovens, air fryers, hot plates, electric grills, sandwich makers
- Candles, incense, wax warmers, and anything with an open flame
- Halogen lamps
- Extension cords without a breaker; outlet splitters and multi-plug adapters
- Space heaters and personal A/C units (unless your school provides/approves them)
- Hoverboards, e-scooters, e-bikes, and other e-mobility devices
- Weapons of any kind — including decorative — and fireworks
- Candles, incense, hookahs, and any open flame
- Grills and appliances with an open heating element (e.g. George Foreman grills)
- Personal electric vehicles — e-scooters, e-bikes, and hoverboards
- Extension cords, and personal air-conditioner units (every hall is already cooled)
