Macalester College

Macalester is about 2,100 students on a compact 53-acre campus in a residential Saint Paul neighborhood, at the corner of Grand and Snelling — genuinely urban in a way most small liberal arts colleges are not. Grand Avenue's restaurants and shops start a block from the dorms, Summit Avenue's Victorian boulevard runs along the north edge of campus, and both downtowns plus MSP airport are a short drive. It's a Scottish-identity school with bagpipes at convocation and one of the highest shares of international students of any American liberal arts college. One thing changes for your student specifically: starting with the Fall 2026 entering class, Macalester requires students to live on campus for three years, not two.

What to wear in Saint Paul, month by month

This region runs from a humid late summer to a hard winter in about ten weeks. The mistake out-of-region families make is packing the whole year in August.

Move-in (Aug 31)	62–81°F	Warm and often humid for the drive in, and no residence hall has air conditioning — the small fan is on Macalester's own recommended list for a reason.
Sept–Oct	40–73°F	The gorgeous stretch: mild days, cold nights, and the elms along Summit Avenue turning. By late October the first hard frost has come.
Nov–Dec	14–41°F	Winter arrives in earnest and does not leave. Snow that falls in November is generally still there in March, and the walk from Dupre to class is short but genuinely cold.
Jan–Feb	9–29°F	Twin Cities winter, with stretches below zero and a wind that finds every gap. This is the weather Macalester tells warm-climate students to buy for after they arrive, not before.
Mar–Apr	25–59°F	A long, gray, slushy thaw that turns suddenly beautiful in late April, when Shaw Field and the Great Lawn fill the first warm afternoon.

Don't buy the winter coat before your student gets to Minnesota. That's Macalester's own advice on its packing list — students from warm climates should wait and buy the coat, boots, mittens, and hat here, where the stores actually stock for this and the staff know what nine-below requires. Two purchases to get right before you come, though: the refrigerator has to be under 3.6 cubic feet, which is stricter than most schools, and a microwave is not allowed in the room at all, so don't buy one. The bigger planning item is financial. The class entering in fall 2026 is the first required to live on campus for three years instead of two, so budget for three years of room and board rather than assuming a junior-year apartment.

The housing form opens in 1600grand
The housing application appears under the Student Life tab of the 1600grand portal. Your student reads and signs the Housing and Dining Agreement for 2026–27 and answers the preference questions. Answer these carefully — they are the main input, since Macalester places students rather than running a lottery.

June 28
Deadline to edit preferences
June 28 is the cutoff for changes to the form. Worth knowing before you fill it in: Macalester says plainly that it doesn't encourage roommate requests and can accommodate very few mutual ones, so a request from a friend met online is unlikely to determine the outcome. Residential First-Year Course placement comes first.

Mid-July
Assignment, roommate, and move-in slot
In mid-July Macalester sends the hall and room assignment, roommate information, and instructions to choose a move-in time slot. This is the moment to coordinate who brings the fridge — remember it must be under 3.6 cubic feet — and to check whether the room's beds loft, which differs by hall.

Move-in day, by appointment
Move-in is Monday, August 31, 2026, run in 30-minute slots between 8:00 a.m. and noon, with check-in at Kagin Campus Center from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Label everything with a name and room number before you leave home. Orientation runs from that afternoon through September 4.

Where you'll live at Macalester College

Where first-years live

First-years live in Doty, Turck, and Dupre, all within a couple of minutes of each other on the north side of campus. The housing form opens in late May or early June through the 1600grand portal, where students sign the Housing and Dining Agreement and answer preference questions; edits close June 28 and assignments arrive in mid-July along with roommate details and a link to pick a 30-minute move-in slot. Two things surprise families. Macalester actively discourages roommate requests — in its own words, it accommodates very few of the mutual requests it receives — and placement is driven first by Residential First-Year Course communities, which sit in Doty, Turck, and Dupre, ahead of any hall preference. There are also a few triples and quads, so a roommate can turn out to be roommates.

DupreLargest hall · first-years on 2–4

The biggest residence on campus, at the northeast corner where Summit meets Snelling. Built in 1962 and renovated in 1994, it's roughly 60% doubles and 40% singles with one triple and one quad per floor, and its newer extra-long twins can be lofted. All four residential floors are gender-inclusive. Two washers and two dryers per floor, kitchenettes with microwaves, a full kitchen downstairs, and a first-floor lounge with a fireplace.

DotyAll first-years · sink in every room

Built in 1964 on Summit Avenue between Wallace and Turck, housing only first-years. Doubles are a generous 14'3" by 14'7" and every room has its own sink. Each floor has two study rooms plus a lounge with cable TV and a kitchen with stove, sink, and microwave; the main floor has a formal lounge with a fireplace. Third and fourth floors are single-gender and the fifth is gender-flexible.

TurckAll first-years · 1957, rebuilt 2004

On Grand Avenue between Dupre and the Wallace–Bigelow–Bowman cluster, all first-years, with doubles on every floor at 16' by 12' and a sink in each room. Floor lounges have cable TV and kitchenettes with a stove, sink, and microwave, and laundry is on the lower level. The first-floor Sounds of Blackness Lounge, opened in 2015, is named for the Grammy-winning group that started at Macalester in the seventies.

BigelowUpper-division · where year two often goes

Worth knowing about now that the residency requirement runs three years. Built in 1947 and updated in 2014 on the corner of Grand and Macalester Street, it holds over 110 students in 50 doubles and 7 singles, with single-gender floors and a gender-inclusive first floor. Its best feature is a Minnesota one: it connects to three neighboring halls by skyway, so in February you can reach your friends without going outside.

One address for the whole college, and Macalester is explicit that SPO numbers are not needed for mailing or shipping — just the student's full name. Mail and packages are picked up at the mail center on the lower level of the campus center, open weekdays 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Saturdays 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. while classes are in session.

Three years on campus, starting with this class

Macalester has moved from a two-year to a three-year residency requirement, and the Fall 2026 entering class is the first one it applies to — six semesters of college housing rather than four. Students who study away for a semester get one of the six waived, and documented family or medical needs go through the existing exemption process. Plan the four-year budget around three years of room and board, not two.

No air conditioning, and a fridge cap that's stricter than most

None of the residence halls are air conditioned, which matters for an August 31 move-in and again in May; Macalester recommends a small fan, and temperature-controlled rooms exist only as an accommodation through the Center for Disability Resources. The refrigerator limit is under 3.6 cubic feet, noticeably smaller than the 4 to 5 cubic feet most colleges allow, and microwaves are banned from rooms entirely. Measure before you buy, or rent through Bedloft and skip the problem.

The commercial spine of the neighborhood starts a block from the dorms — coffee, restaurants, bookshops, and groceries within a walk. It is the single biggest practical difference between Macalester and a rural liberal arts college: your student does not need a car or a ride to get anything.

The campus sits on the longest continuous stretch of Victorian residential architecture in the country, running four and a half miles from the Mississippi to the Cathedral of Saint Paul. It's the standard running and walking route, and the reason the neighborhood looks the way it does.

Minneapolis

The other half of the Twin Cities, with the museums, music venues, and the University of Minnesota. Metro Transit runs from the neighborhood, and the Green Line light rail connects the two downtowns.

One of the easiest airport runs of any liberal arts college — a major hub twenty minutes away, which makes break travel and family visits genuinely simple.

Midway & Highland Park

The handful of ordinary hotels closest to campus sit north toward the Midway, including a Quality Inn on the St. Paul–Minneapolis line. Not scenic, but the shortest drive to Grand and Snelling.

The Saint Paul Hotel, the Celeste, and a Holiday Inn among others — a real hotel district ten minutes east, and the nicer option for a family weekend.

Effectively unlimited rooms across the river and around MSP and the Mall of America. The right answer if you're flying in, or if you booked late.

The Twin Cities have plenty of hotel rooms — the catch is that almost none of them are walking distance. Macalester's neighborhood is residential, so every option means a short drive. Move-in is a fixed 8 a.m.–1 p.m. window on a single Monday, so book something close enough that an early start isn't a problem, and reserve early for Family Fest and Commencement.
