Kenyon College
Kenyon is about 1,800 students on a hilltop in Gambier, Ohio, a village of a few hundred people an hour northeast of Columbus — the college and the town are effectively the same place. Every student is required to live in college housing and be on the dining plan, all four years, which makes this one of the most completely residential colleges in the country. The spine of campus is Middle Path, a mile of crushed gravel that everyone walks several times a day, and the practical consequence of a village this small is that there is almost nowhere to buy anything you forgot. First-years live together in five halls: Gund, Lewis, Mather, McBride, and Norton.
What to wear in Gambier, month by month
This region runs from a humid late summer to a hard winter in about ten weeks. The mistake out-of-region families make is packing the whole year in August.

What Kenyon College lets you bring
- A fan, specifically if the assignment is Gund, Lewis, or Norton — those three Quad halls have no air conditioning and Kenyon's own pages tell residents to bring one
- A desk lamp — every first-year hall page describes the built-in lighting as soft and tells students to plan on their own
- An area rug: Gund's floors are tile and Lewis and Norton are uncarpeted, which matters on a January morning
- Boots that handle gravel and mud, because Middle Path is crushed stone and it is the way you get everywhere
- A power strip with surge protection — plain multi-plug adapters are prohibited, the surge-protected kind is explicitly approved
- Only what fits in the room: Kenyon has no campus storage, so anything that comes has to live in the room all year
- Twin XL bedding (confirm your specific hall)
- UL/ETL power strip with a built-in circuit breaker — not a bare extension cord
- Damage-free wall hangings like Command strips — no nails or screws
- Low-draw LED desk and task lamps
- A fan, a reusable water bottle, and UL-listed electronics
- Open-coil / open-flame cooking: toasters, toaster ovens, air fryers, hot plates, electric grills, sandwich makers
- Candles, incense, wax warmers, and anything with an open flame
- Halogen lamps
- Extension cords without a breaker; outlet splitters and multi-plug adapters
- Space heaters and personal A/C units (unless your school provides/approves them)
- Hoverboards, e-scooters, e-bikes, and other e-mobility devices
- Weapons of any kind — including decorative — and fireworks
- Air conditioners, which the handbook lists as unapproved equipment
- Portable space heaters and halogen lamps
- Multi-plug adapters — power strips with surge protectors are the approved substitute
- Air fryers, crock pots, deep fryers, electric woks, grills, and sandwich makers; cooking happens in an approved microwave or not at all
- Candles, incense, scented wax burners, and any other open flame — plus flammable liquids and propane grills
- Hoverboards, and pets of any kind except fish in a tank of 10 gallons or less

The housing application opens
Once the deposit is in, the housing application appears in the student portal on May 1. It's the only input Residential Life uses to place first-years, so it's worth answering carefully and honestly — sleep schedule, tidiness, and how social your student actually wants their room to be.

Priority application deadline
June 3 is the priority deadline. Kenyon doesn't run a first-year lottery: staff read the applications and make the assignments themselves in early summer. Applying late doesn't forfeit housing — every student is required to live on campus — but it does mean being placed after the main pass.
- 03Mid-July
Hall assignment arrives
Housing assignments are released in mid-July, which is when you'll learn whether the answer is an air-conditioned hall or one of the Quad buildings. Wait for this before buying a fan, a rug, or measuring for anything — Kenyon publishes room dimensions and photos per hall once the assignment is known.
- 04Late July
Roommate name and email
Roommate information follows in late July with names and email addresses. This is the window to have the one useful conversation — who is bringing the fridge, who is bringing the microwave, and who owns the rug — so you don't arrive with two of everything and nowhere to store the spare.
- 05August 22
Move-in day
New students move in Saturday, August 22, 2026, with check-in and the Orientation kick-off at the Lowry Center, meetings with Orientation Groups and Community Advisors, and a dessert reception for families that evening. Gambier is a village absorbing an entire class in a morning — come early and expect to park farther than you'd like.
Where you'll live at Kenyon College
Where first-years live
First-years live in one of five halls — Gund, Lewis, Mather, McBride, and Norton — all of them alcohol-free and smoke-free. Most students are in doubles, with a limited number of singles assigned by availability and need. The housing application opens May 1 for deposited students and has a priority deadline of June 3; Residential Life does the placing itself, based on what students put in that application, rather than running a lottery. Assignments land in mid-July and roommate names and emails follow in late July. The split that matters most on arrival day: Mather and McBride are carpeted and air-conditioned, while the three halls around the First-Year Quad are neither.
The biggest of the five and the social center of the class, next to Gund Commons and its game room. Fully carpeted and air-conditioned, with two large lounges, basement laundry, and walls that generations of residents have covered in murals. Doubles average a roomy 187 square feet.
Centrally placed near Gund Commons, carpeted and air-conditioned like McBride, with two large lounges, first-floor laundry, and its own painted murals. Rooms run a bit smaller — singles average 89 square feet and doubles 177 — and come with a built-in closet and desk.
Sits between Lewis and Norton on the First-Year Quad, with doubles averaging 205 square feet — the largest first-year rooms on campus. Rooms cluster at opposite ends of each floor around big central lounges, and there's a second-floor study room and basement laundry. Floors are tile, so bring a rug.
A 1950s building on the north edge of the First-Year Quad with beautiful built-in wardrobes, big windows with deep 12-inch ledges, and singles averaging 129 square feet. Warm in winter and warm in September too — residents are told to bring a fan. Lounge with a TV and vending; laundry is next door in Gund.
Norton's counterpart on the south side of the Quad, same era and same layout: uncarpeted rooms, built-in wardrobes with cabinets above, and large windows. Known for running warm year-round, which is welcome in February and less so in August. Laundry is in Gund next door.

A mile of crushed gravel under old trees, with the village's few blocks alongside it — the bookstore in Farr Hall, the Village Market, Wiggin Street Coffee. This is the whole town, and it is genuinely lovely and genuinely small.
The Brown Family Environmental Center & the Kokosing
Hundreds of acres of prairie, meadow, and river bottomland at the bottom of the hill, with trails along the Kokosing River. It's Kenyon's back yard and the reason outdoor gear gets used here.
Mount Vernon
The actual town: groceries, pharmacies, big-box stores, restaurants, and the hospital. Five miles from campus and the answer to nearly every errand a first-year can't run on foot.
Columbus & CMH
Columbus and its airport are about an hour southwest — the standard route in and out at breaks. There's no public transit from Gambier, so this is a ride-share, a shuttle, or a friend with a car.
