James Madison

James Madison is a friendly, fast-growing campus in Virginia's Shenandoah Valley, a longtime favorite for Mid-Atlantic families. The valley gives you a warm move-in and a real-but-manageable winter, so plan for both ends.

The one thing generic lists get wrong

What to wear in Harrisonburg, month by month

This region runs from a humid late summer to a hard winter in about ten weeks. The mistake out-of-region families make is packing the whole year in August.

Move-in (Aug)82–90°FWarm valley summer. Lightweight clothes, a fan.
Sept–Oct55–78°FGorgeous Shenandoah fall. Layers and a jacket.
Nov–Dec32–52°FCold, crisp, some snow. A real coat and gloves.
Jan–Feb25–45°FReal but manageable winter. Heavy coat, boots.
Mar–May50–75°FWarming into a green spring. A jacket and layers.
The move: pack the warm-weather basics now and bring the coat and boots by Thanksgiving — the valley winter is real but manageable.

What James Madison lets you bring

Bring it
  • Twin XL bedding (confirm your specific hall)
  • UL/ETL power strip with a built-in circuit breaker — not a bare extension cord
  • Damage-free wall hangings like Command strips — no nails or screws
  • Low-draw LED desk and task lamps
  • A fan, a reusable water bottle, and UL-listed electronics
Leave it home
  • Open-coil / open-flame cooking: toasters, toaster ovens, air fryers, hot plates, electric grills, sandwich makers
  • Candles, incense, wax warmers, and anything with an open flame
  • Halogen lamps
  • Extension cords without a breaker; outlet splitters and multi-plug adapters
  • Space heaters and personal A/C units (unless your school provides/approves them)
  • Hoverboards, e-scooters, e-bikes, and other e-mobility devices
  • Weapons of any kind — including decorative — and fireworks

These come from James Madison's official housing pages and cover the essentials plus the genuinely local rules. Double-check the current official guidance before you buy — policies and renovations change every year.

The actual buildings

Where you'll live at James Madison

First-year residence areas

JMU houses first-years across a few residential areas, and you'll rank preferences. The historic Bluestone halls on the Quad have the most character; the Village and Skyline areas are popular, social first-year hubs. A/C varies by building, so a fan helps for the warm valley start.

The Village & SkylineSocial · popular

Clustered first-year halls (Chesapeake, Shenandoah, Eagle, and the Skyline buildings) — buzzy, social, and a classic JMU freshman scene.

Bluestone (the Quad)Historic

The original bluestone halls around the Quad (Wayland, Spotswood, Logan, Gifford) — older, character-rich, and central.
