Georgia

UGA is the spirited heart of Athens — a true Southern college town with football Saturdays that take over the whole city. Move-in lands in real heat and humidity, so the dorms run cold and you'll pack for sun, not snow.

The one thing generic lists get wrong

What to wear in Athens, month by month

The national lists assume everyone needs a winter coat. Here the real questions are heat, sun, and rain — plus clothes for buildings kept ice-cold against it.

Move-in (Aug)85–95°FHot and humid. Lightweight everything, sun protection.
Sept–Oct70s–80sWarm, gorgeous fall. Shorts, tees, a light layer.
Nov–Dec45–65°FCooling off. A jacket and sweaters.
Jan–Feb35–55°FMild winter, occasional cold snap. One real coat.
Mar–May65–85°FWarming back to hot, spring storms. A rain jacket.
The flip: for August you're packing for heat, not cold — breathable layers, sun protection, a big water bottle, and one light jacket for the short winter.

What Georgia lets you bring

Bring it
  • Twin XL bedding (confirm your specific hall)
  • UL/ETL power strip with a built-in circuit breaker — not a bare extension cord
  • Damage-free wall hangings like Command strips — no nails or screws
  • Low-draw LED desk and task lamps
  • A fan, a reusable water bottle, and UL-listed electronics
Leave it home
  • Open-coil / open-flame cooking: toasters, toaster ovens, air fryers, hot plates, electric grills, sandwich makers
  • Candles, incense, wax warmers, and anything with an open flame
  • Halogen lamps
  • Extension cords without a breaker; outlet splitters and multi-plug adapters
  • Space heaters and personal A/C units (unless your school provides/approves them)
  • Hoverboards, e-scooters, e-bikes, and other e-mobility devices
  • Weapons of any kind — including decorative — and fireworks
  • Personal A/C units — cooling is already provided

These come from Georgia's official housing pages and cover the essentials plus the genuinely local rules. Double-check the current official guidance before you buy — policies and renovations change every year.

First-year communities

UGA requires first-years to live on campus, and you self-select your space by a timed slot after applying — so applying early matters. The high-rise trio (Brumby, Creswell, Russell) is the classic big, social first-year scene; the historic Myers community offers smaller, older charm. All halls are air-conditioned.

Athens, GA [ZIP]
Each residence hall has its own mailroom and street address (Brown Hall, for example, is 100 Fox Rd, Athens, GA 30609) — you'll use your hall's once you're assigned. Don't have anything arrive before about Aug 14, and only after you've checked in.
