Elon University
Elon is about 6,000 undergraduates in Alamance County, North Carolina, between Greensboro and the Research Triangle, on a campus that is a designated botanical garden — the oaks, the lakes, and the grounds are a real part of the institution's identity rather than a brochure line. Housing is organized into residential neighborhoods rather than a list of dorms, each with its own theme, faculty involvement, and commons building, and first-years are placed into one of five: Colonnades, Danieley, East, Global, or Historic. The unusual part is that students get no say in which — neighborhoods are randomly assigned. Elon requires two years on campus, and its January Winter Term feeds one of the highest study-abroad participation rates in the country.
What to wear in Elon, month by month
The national lists assume everyone needs a winter coat. Here the real questions are heat, sun, and rain — plus clothes for buildings kept ice-cold against it.

What Elon University lets you bring
- Warm-weather clothes first — late August in the Piedmont runs near 90°F, and the heavy coat won't be needed until well after Thanksgiving break
- A rain jacket and an umbrella, because North Carolina rain arrives hard and briefly rather than as drizzle
- Storage that fits under a bed on the floor: the fridge has to sit on the ground, so it competes for the same square footage
- A fan for the shoulder seasons even though the halls are cooled — the buildings are large and the September afternoons are long
- Anything heat-sensitive carried in the car rather than shipped: Elon warns that its overflow storage pods are not temperature-controlled during peak arrival
- Twin XL bedding (confirm your specific hall)
- UL/ETL power strip with a built-in circuit breaker — not a bare extension cord
- Damage-free wall hangings like Command strips — no nails or screws
- Low-draw LED desk and task lamps
- A fan, a reusable water bottle, and UL-listed electronics
- Open-coil / open-flame cooking: toasters, toaster ovens, air fryers, hot plates, electric grills, sandwich makers
- Candles, incense, wax warmers, and anything with an open flame
- Halogen lamps
- Extension cords without a breaker; outlet splitters and multi-plug adapters
- Space heaters and personal A/C units (unless your school provides/approves them)
- Hoverboards, e-scooters, e-bikes, and other e-mobility devices
- Weapons of any kind — including decorative — and fireworks
- Microwaves anywhere except the Danieley flats and campus apartments, where they must be used in the kitchen
- Window air-conditioning units
- Candles, incense, non-electric fuel lamps and lanterns, and simmer pots
- Halogen lamps, salt lamps, lava lamps, track lighting, and multi-bulb lamps
- Appliances with exposed heating elements — air fryers, deep fryers, toaster ovens, hot plates, and wax warmers
- Pets other than fish in a tank of 10 gallons or less, plus approved service and assistance animals

Apply for housing — but not for a neighborhood
Elon's housing application collects lifestyle information and roommate matching, not neighborhood preference. It's worth saying plainly: your student cannot request Historic or Global or any of the others, and Elon says so directly. What the form does influence is roommate pairing, so the honest answers about sleep and tidiness are the ones that matter.

Assignments and roommate information typically post online on July 10. This is the date the shopping actually starts, because the bedding depends on it — a single in Global, East, or Colonnades needs full-size sheets while everything else needs twin XL. Check the specific neighborhood's page for room dimensions and furniture before ordering storage.

Campus box number, then ship
Campus box assignments become available in early August through the OnTrack account, and Mail Services begins accepting student packages after August 9. Ship to the box number, never to a department address or to The Inn at Elon. Elon notes that peak-arrival overflow storage uses pods without temperature control, so keep electronics, candles-adjacent items, and anything meltable out of the shipment.

Move-in day, by assigned time slot
New students move in Friday, August 21, 2026, each with a unique arrival time; the time slot appears in the Acorn account on July 10 alongside the housing assignment, and check-in runs through the Schar Center. New Student Orientation follows immediately, running Friday, August 21 through Monday, August 24, and is required for all new students.

Where first-years live
Elon organizes housing into residential neighborhoods, each a cluster of buildings around a commons with its own theme, faculty and staff leadership, student peer mentors, and a neighborhood association. First-years are placed in one of five — Colonnades, Danieley, East, Global, or Historic — and the assignment is random: Elon explicitly does not accept neighborhood preferences from incoming students, though it keeps roommate matches together. Assignments and roommate information post online in the summer, typically on July 10. Elon requires two years on campus; students who want to move off before junior year have to apply for a release, with exceptions only for students living with a parent or guardian, nontraditional students, and transfers out of high school a year or more.
The largest first-year community, in the original core of campus: Hook, Barney, Brannock, Carolina, Sloan, Smith, Virginia, and West, plus the William R. Kenan Jr. Honors Pavilion and the Isabella Cannon Pavilion. The theme is campus tradition and the liberal arts, and the Honors LLC lives in the Kenan Pavilion. These are the traditional brick buildings most people picture when they picture Elon.
Five halls — Whittington, Gill, Jackson, Perkins, and Global Building E — on the shore of Lake Mary Nell, built around world cultures and languages. Its 50,000-square-foot commons holds the Isabella Cannon Global Education Center, a digital theater, multimedia rooms, an organic tea cafe, and the Great Hall, which makes it the natural landing spot for students aiming at Elon's study-abroad programs. Note that single rooms here have full-size beds.
Story, Moffitt, Kivette, Staley, and Allen Halls, plus the EcoVillage houses, clustered around the geothermal field near the Koury Business Center — students say they live 'on the geo.' The neighborhood is heated and cooled geothermally and organized around sustainability and innovation, with several living-learning communities. It mixes all four class years rather than concentrating first-years. Singles here take full-size bedding.
The newest of the five, opened in 2018: East Neighborhood Commons plus East A, B, and C. The focus is civic engagement and social innovation, and the majority of residents are first-years, many of them in LLCs like Change Makers. Newest buildings on this list, and another neighborhood where single rooms use full-size beds.
The one first-year neighborhood built around apartments and flats rather than corridors: Danieley Apartments A–F and O & P, Flats G–K, and Maynard, Colclough, and Chandler halls, set on Lake Verona at the edge of campus. Eight-to-ten-person flats and four-person apartments make for a different social scale, and the theme is leadership and wellness. It's also the only first-year neighborhood where microwaves are permitted — in the flats' kitchens.

Two lakes anchor the Global and Danieley neighborhoods respectively, and the botanical-garden grounds connect them. The campus is genuinely designed to be walked, and most students do.
Burlington
The larger neighboring town, with the groceries, big-box stores, restaurants, and hotels that the village of Elon does not have. Where families do the move-in day errand run.
Greensboro (PTI) & Raleigh-Durham (RDU)
Two airports within reach — PTI at Greensboro is closer and quieter, RDU is bigger with more direct flights. Chapel Hill and Durham are about an hour east, Greensboro half an hour west.
