Dickinson

Dickinson is a limestone campus in Carlisle, chartered in 1783 and signed into being by Benjamin Rush — which makes it older than the Constitution written by his friends. Today it's 2,200 students, a global-studies powerhouse with its own organic farm, and a college town square straight from central casting.

The one thing generic lists get wrong

What to wear in Carlisle, month by month

This region runs from a humid late summer to a hard winter in about ten weeks. The mistake out-of-region families make is packing the whole year in August.

Move-in (Aug)60–85°FWarm Cumberland Valley summer — a fan helps in the halls without A/C.
Sept–Oct45–72°FCrisp valley fall with the ridgelines going gold on both horizons.
Nov–Dec28–48°FGray and cold by Thanksgiving — full coat weather.
Jan–Feb22–42°FReal winter with a few good snows; campus is compact enough to hustle.
Mar–May40–68°FGreen spring across the limestone quads.
The flip: fan for the first warm weeks, real coat by November. Add one presentable outfit — Dickinson's small classes mean presentations start week one.

What Dickinson lets you bring

Bring it
  • Twin XL bedding (confirm your specific hall)
  • UL/ETL power strip with a built-in circuit breaker — not a bare extension cord
  • Damage-free wall hangings like Command strips — no nails or screws
  • Low-draw LED desk and task lamps
  • A fan, a reusable water bottle, and UL-listed electronics
Leave it home
  • Open-coil / open-flame cooking: toasters, toaster ovens, air fryers, hot plates, electric grills, sandwich makers
  • Candles, incense, wax warmers, and anything with an open flame
  • Halogen lamps
  • Extension cords without a breaker; outlet splitters and multi-plug adapters
  • Space heaters and personal A/C units (unless your school provides/approves them)
  • Hoverboards, e-scooters, e-bikes, and other e-mobility devices
  • Weapons of any kind — including decorative — and fireworks

These come from Dickinson's official housing pages and cover the essentials plus the genuinely local rules. Double-check the current official guidance before you buy — policies and renovations change every year.

    Move in + orientation

First-years arrive several days early for orientation. Move-in is quick — the halls cluster together — and the town square dinner afterward is the tradition.

First-year halls

First-years live together in dedicated halls a short walk from the academic quad, organized around small advising groups. Assignments come from a summer questionnaire — the college does the matching.

Carlisle logistics, sorted

How to send a package to a Dickinson student

[HUB Box #]
Carlisle, PA 17013
Mail and packages route through student boxes at the HUB (Holland Union Building) — the box number arrives with the assignment. Bring a student ID to pick up.

Old West and the mermaid

Old West (1803) — designed by the architect of the U.S. Capitol's early plans, Benjamin Latrobe — anchors campus, with a mermaid weathervane on top that's been the college symbol for two centuries. Graduates walk down its steps at commencement; your student will walk up them at convocation.

The farm on your plate

Dickinson runs its own 80-acre USDA-certified organic farm, and it genuinely supplies the dining hall. The farm crew jobs and Friday farm dinners are quietly one of the college's best traditions.
