Davidson College
Davidson is about 1,900 students on a red-brick campus that opens straight onto the Main Street of its own small town, twenty minutes north of Charlotte and five minutes from Lake Norman. It runs on one of the country's oldest and most-trusted Honor Codes — exams are unproctored and self-scheduled, and students leave laptops sitting in the library — and it has a four-year residency requirement, so more than 90 percent of the college lives on campus. First-years all get a roommate and a double, in one of four halls.
What to wear in Davidson, month by month
This corner of the country breaks every generic packing list. It is not about surviving cold — it is about staying dry through a long gray winter and a famously short, beautiful summer.

What Davidson College lets you bring
- A UL-listed surge protector with an on/off switch — plain extension cords are prohibited outright, so this is the only legal way to add outlets
- A short step stool if you raise the bed — the frames adjust up to 30½" of clearance and getting in becomes a genuine climb
- Rice cookers, slow cookers, Instant Pots, hot-air popcorn poppers, and an electric kettle with enclosed coils and auto shutoff — all approved in rooms
- Command strips and hooks, and nothing else for hanging — nails, cup hooks, wallpaper, and peel-and-stick decals are all banned
- Warm-weather clothes and a fan mindset for August — move-in in the Charlotte suburbs runs near 90°F, though every room has central A/C
- Twin XL bedding (confirm your specific hall)
- UL/ETL power strip with a built-in circuit breaker — not a bare extension cord
- Damage-free wall hangings like Command strips — no nails or screws
- Low-draw LED desk and task lamps
- A fan, a reusable water bottle, and UL-listed electronics
- Open-coil / open-flame cooking: toasters, toaster ovens, air fryers, hot plates, electric grills, sandwich makers
- Candles, incense, wax warmers, and anything with an open flame
- Halogen lamps
- Extension cords without a breaker; outlet splitters and multi-plug adapters
- Space heaters and personal A/C units (unless your school provides/approves them)
- Hoverboards, e-scooters, e-bikes, and other e-mobility devices
- Weapons of any kind — including decorative — and fireworks
- Bed risers and lofts of any kind, bought or homemade — the beds adjust instead
- Extension cords (surge protectors only), and window or portable air conditioners
- Adhesive string lights, wallpaper, and decorative decals of every type, including 'removable' ones
- Halogen lamps, electric blankets, electric heaters, candles, incense, hookahs, and anything with a flame
- Air fryers in rooms — approved only in the building kitchens, and unplugged when not in use
- Hoverboards, fog machines, waterbeds, sleeper sofas, dartboards, personal security cameras, and add-on door locks

Watch your personal email for the housing form
Residence Life emails incoming students a housing preference form over the summer — to the personal address, not a Davidson one, so check spam. It's the whole basis for roommate matching, and vague answers produce vague matches.
- 02Summer
Complete the application in StarRez
Davidson runs housing through the StarRez portal, where the application, questionnaire, and any accommodation requests live. First-years are assigned a double and a roommate by Residence Life rather than picking their own.

Ship 3–5 business days ahead, not sooner
Davidson accepts student shipments starting three to five business days before your assigned move-in date. Anything that arrives earlier risks being returned to sender, and packages should be collected within 24 hours of the pickup notice.

New student move-in
First-years and incoming transfers move in on Wednesday, August 19, 2026. Detailed arrival procedures, timing, and building access go out by email over the summer — returning students don't arrive until the weekend after.
Where you'll live at Davidson College
The first-year halls
Every first-year is assigned a double with a roommate — occasionally a triple — in one of four halls, matched from a housing preference form Residence Life emails out over the summer. All four have central air conditioning with room-level controls, card-access entry, and RLO student leaders on every community. After first year, the four-year residency requirement keeps almost everyone on campus, moving through Dorm Row, Chidsey, and eventually the Martin Court apartments.
Five floors and up to 334 students in the middle of campus, with an elevator, two laundry rooms, a kitchen, multiple lounges, and a mix of common and private bathrooms. Also home to the Lavender Lounge and a quiet study space. First-years live in doubles; returning students take the fourth floor.
A four-floor hall on Dorm Row with about 70 residents, all in doubles — the smallest and most tight-knit of the first-year options, with a big TV lounge on each floor, a shared kitchen, and its own laundry.
Five floors and up to 129 students in doubles, right beside the Vail Commons dining hall — a TV lounge on every floor, both common and private bathrooms, and the shortest possible walk to breakfast.

Not housing, but worth knowing: Patterson Court is Davidson's system of eating houses and fraternities where most upper-class students take their meals. First-years join in the spring, and it shapes the social calendar more than any residence hall does.

Main Street, Davidson
The campus fronts directly onto a genuinely walkable small-town main street — Summit Coffee, the Soda Shop, restaurants, and the College Store at 137 N. Main. There is no gap between town and campus, which is unusual and is most of the charm.
Lake Norman
North Carolina's largest man-made lake starts just west of town — sailing, rowing, swimming, and a whole warm-weather social life built around getting on the water.
Charlotte
Uptown Charlotte is about 25 minutes south on I-77 — the banks, the museums, the Panthers and Hornets, and everything a small town twenty miles away can't supply.
I-77 & Charlotte Douglas
Charlotte Douglas International is roughly 30–35 minutes away and is a major hub, which makes Davidson unusually easy to fly to for a small liberal arts college. First-years mostly get by on foot; the town is that compact.

~5–10 minHomewood Suites Davidson, Hampton Inn Charlotte North/Lake Norman, and the cluster around Cornelius and Exit 28 — plenty of rooms, easy parking, and a short drive up I-77.
Mooresville & Concord
~15–25 minMooresville to the north and Concord to the east add a lot of inventory when Davidson and Cornelius fill, and both are simple drives on move-in morning.
