Clemson

Clemson is a passionate, orange-everything campus tucked into the foothills of upstate South Carolina. The early-fall heat is real and the dorms are cooled, so you'll pack for sun and humidity, with one warm layer for the cooler months.

The one thing generic lists get wrong

What to wear in Clemson, month by month

The national lists assume everyone needs a winter coat. Here the real questions are heat, sun, and rain — plus clothes for buildings kept ice-cold against it.

Move-in (Aug)88–95°FHot, humid foothills summer. Light, breathable clothes.
Sept–Oct70–85°FWarm, beautiful fall. Shorts, tees, a light layer.
Nov–Dec42–62°FCooling, crisp. A jacket and sweaters.
Jan–Feb32–55°FMild winter, occasional cold snap. One warm coat.
Mar–May65–85°FWarm spring with rain. A rain jacket.
The flip: pack for heat and humidity first — breathable clothes and sun protection — with a couple of warm layers for the cooler foothill months.

What Clemson lets you bring

Bring it
  • Twin XL bedding (confirm your specific hall)
  • UL/ETL power strip with a built-in circuit breaker — not a bare extension cord
  • Damage-free wall hangings like Command strips — no nails or screws
  • Low-draw LED desk and task lamps
  • A fan, a reusable water bottle, and UL-listed electronics
Leave it home
  • Open-coil / open-flame cooking: toasters, toaster ovens, air fryers, hot plates, electric grills, sandwich makers
  • Candles, incense, wax warmers, and anything with an open flame
  • Halogen lamps
  • Extension cords without a breaker; outlet splitters and multi-plug adapters
  • Space heaters and personal A/C units (unless your school provides/approves them)
  • Hoverboards, e-scooters, e-bikes, and other e-mobility devices
  • Weapons of any kind — including decorative — and fireworks
  • Personal A/C units — cooling is already provided

These come from Clemson's official housing pages and cover the essentials plus the genuinely local rules. Double-check the current official guidance before you buy — policies and renovations change every year.

Where you'll live at Clemson

First-year housing

Clemson requires freshmen to live on campus, and you pick your style and location after applying. The "Shoeboxes" are the classic, social high-rise freshman dorms; Core Campus and Douthit Hills are the newer suite-style hubs. Every hall is air-conditioned for the upstate heat.

The ShoeboxesClassic · social

Mauldin, Holmes, Lever, and the other 1960s high-rises — compact, traditional rooms, central, and the most social (and affordable) freshman scene.

Core Campus & Douthit HillsNewer · suite-style

Modern suite-style living with retail and dining built in — Douthit Hills is the newest hub at the edge of campus, Core Campus is right in the middle.

Hotels in Clemson / Seneca

~10-min drive

Chain hotels in Clemson, Central, and Seneca cover the area; book far ahead for game weekends.

Lakeside

Lake Hartwell-area lodging

Lake rentals and inns nearby make a scenic family base.

Book game weekends a year out. The Clemson area has limited hotels and they sell out (and spike) for every home football Saturday, plus move-in and graduation. The on-campus Martin Inn is the easiest — reserve as early as you can.
