Case Western Reserve University

Case Western Reserve is a private research university in Cleveland's University Circle — a dense square mile of museums, gardens, and concert halls that doubles as its campus. Formed by the 1967 federation of Case Institute of Technology and Western Reserve University, it's one of the country's strongest research universities, known for engineering, the sciences, medicine, and nursing, with a heavy emphasis on co-op and undergraduate research. First-years all live together in the North Residential Village and join one of four themed residential colleges — Cedar, Juniper, Magnolia, and Mistletoe — moving in mid-August. Most first-year houses aren't air-conditioned, and Cleveland winters off Lake Erie are long and snowy.

The one thing generic lists get wrong

What to wear in Cleveland, month by month

This region runs from a humid late summer to a hard winter in about ten weeks. The mistake out-of-region families make is packing the whole year in August.

Move-in (mid-Aug)62–82°FWarm, sometimes humid late-summer days. Most first-year houses have no A/C, so a fan is the single most useful thing to pack for the first weeks.
Sept–Oct44–72°FCrisp air and a pretty University Circle fall. A light jacket and a few sweaters.
Nov–Dec30–48°FCold and gray fast, with lake-effect clouds and the first snow. A warm coat, gloves, and boots before Thanksgiving.
Jan–Feb20–36°FA long, gray, snowy Cleveland winter off Lake Erie. A heavy parka, insulated waterproof boots, and warm layers are essentials.
Mar–May34–64°FA slow, muddy thaw into a green spring. Layers, waterproof shoes, and a rain jacket.
The flip: two things shape the pack list. Most first-year houses have no A/C, so a fan matters for the warm mid-August move-in — and microwaves aren't allowed in first- and second-year rooms, so don't buy one; every house has a full kitchen and floor kitchenettes with microwaves, and a mini fridge (up to 4 cu ft) covers the rest. Then plan for a real Cleveland winter off Lake Erie: a genuine parka and waterproof boots. The bonus: your 'campus' is University Circle, so the free Cleveland Museum of Art and Severance Music Center are a short walk from the dorm.

What Case Western Reserve University lets you bring

Bring it
  • A fan — most first-year houses aren't air-conditioned, and Cleveland's mid-August move-in can be warm and humid
  • Extra-long twin (Twin XL) sheets — the mattresses are 36" × 80"
  • A mini fridge up to 4 cu ft — skip the microwave, since the house kitchens and floor kitchenettes have them
  • A serious winter coat, insulated waterproof boots, gloves, and a hat — Cleveland winters are long, gray, and snowy off Lake Erie
  • A UL-listed surge protector and a raincoat or umbrella for the wet lake-effect months
  • Twin XL bedding (confirm your specific hall)
  • UL/ETL power strip with a built-in circuit breaker — not a bare extension cord
  • Damage-free wall hangings like Command strips — no nails or screws
  • Low-draw LED desk and task lamps
  • A fan, a reusable water bottle, and UL-listed electronics
Leave it home
  • Open-coil / open-flame cooking: toasters, toaster ovens, air fryers, hot plates, electric grills, sandwich makers
  • Candles, incense, wax warmers, and anything with an open flame
  • Halogen lamps
  • Extension cords without a breaker; outlet splitters and multi-plug adapters
  • Space heaters and personal A/C units (unless your school provides/approves them)
  • Hoverboards, e-scooters, e-bikes, and other e-mobility devices
  • Weapons of any kind — including decorative — and fireworks
  • Microwaves — not allowed in first- or second-year rooms (use the house kitchens); combined MicroFridge units aren't permitted either
  • Space heaters, halogen lamps, candles, incense, and any open flame
  • Cooking appliances with open heating elements — hot plates, toaster ovens, George Foreman grills, air fryers, rice cookers, and electric kettles
  • Refrigerators larger than 4 cubic feet
  • Upholstered furniture that isn't certified flame-retardant, and pets other than fish or small caged animals (with approval)

These come from Case Western Reserve University's official housing pages and cover the essentials plus the genuinely local rules. Double-check the current official guidance before you buy — policies and renovations change every year.

Two universities, federated into one

Case Western Reserve was created in 1967 by federating Case Institute of Technology and Western Reserve University (whose roots reach back to 1826). Today it's one of the nation's top research universities, especially strong in engineering, the sciences, medicine, and nursing, with a culture built around co-ops, research, and pre-professional paths.

The campus is University Circle

CWRU's campus is University Circle — a dense cultural district that's home to the free Cleveland Museum of Art, Severance Music Center (the Cleveland Orchestra), the Museum of Natural History, and the Cleveland Botanical Garden, all within walking distance of the dorms. Little Italy and the Uptown district sit right at the edge of campus for food and coffee, and the RTA HealthLine and Red Line connect to downtown and the airport.
