BYU

Brigham Young University is a large, academically strong university in Provo, Utah, owned by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and organized around its Honor Code. Nearly all freshmen live in Helaman Halls — nine single-sex, three-story residence buildings on the west side of campus that share the Cannon Center dining hall. Campus sits at the base of the Wasatch Mountains at about 4,500 feet, so move-in in late August is hot, dry, high-desert weather, and the ski canyons are close by once a cold, snowy Utah winter sets in.

The one thing generic lists get wrong

What to wear in Provo, month by month

This region runs from a humid late summer to a hard winter in about ten weeks. The mistake out-of-region families make is packing the whole year in August.

Move-in (late Aug)60–92°FHot, dry, high-desert days with a big drop after sunset and intense sun at altitude. Pack light clothes, sunscreen, and a fan.
Sept–Oct45–80°FWarm afternoons cooling quickly, with brilliant foliage up Provo Canyon. Layers and a light jacket.
Nov–Dec28–48°FCold settling in with the first mountain snow by finals. A real winter coat, gloves, and boots.
Jan–Feb18–40°FA cold, snowy Wasatch Front winter, sometimes with valley inversions. A heavy parka, snow boots, and warm layers.
Mar–May35–68°FSnowmelt easing into a green, blossoming spring, with mud and quick weather swings. Layers and a rain jacket.
The flip: Move-in is hot, dry, high-desert weather — pack for strong sun and bring a fan, since not every room is air-conditioned — while a serious winter coat and snow boots come out by December for the Wasatch winter. The good news for packing: every Helaman room already includes a mini fridge, and microwaves live in the building lobbies rather than the bedrooms, so there's less to buy than at most schools.

What BYU lets you bring

Bring it
  • A fan for the hot, dry late-August move-in — Provo runs warm and not every Helaman room is air-conditioned
  • Sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat for strong high-desert sun at about 4,500 feet
  • A heavy winter coat, snow boots, gloves, and a hat for a cold, snowy Wasatch winter
  • Twin XL sheets (or standard-twin sheets if you're placed in David John Hall)
  • Twin XL bedding (confirm your specific hall)
  • UL/ETL power strip with a built-in circuit breaker — not a bare extension cord
  • Damage-free wall hangings like Command strips — no nails or screws
  • Low-draw LED desk and task lamps
  • A fan, a reusable water bottle, and UL-listed electronics
Leave it home
  • Open-coil / open-flame cooking: toasters, toaster ovens, air fryers, hot plates, electric grills, sandwich makers
  • Candles, incense, wax warmers, and anything with an open flame
  • Halogen lamps
  • Extension cords without a breaker; outlet splitters and multi-plug adapters
  • Space heaters and personal A/C units (unless your school provides/approves them)
  • Hoverboards, e-scooters, e-bikes, and other e-mobility devices
  • Weapons of any kind — including decorative — and fireworks
  • Personal microwaves in the bedroom — use the shared microwaves in the building lobbies and basements
  • A second mini fridge — one is already provided in every room
  • Hot plates, open-coil cookers, space heaters, and other high-wattage appliances
  • Candles, incense, and any open flame
  • Alcohol, tobacco, coffee, and tea — prohibited on and off campus under the Honor Code and Word of Wisdom

These come from BYU's official housing pages and cover the essentials plus the genuinely local rules. Double-check the current official guidance before you buy — policies and renovations change every year.

Before you can move in

Getting your room at BYU

  1. 01
    Winter/Spring

    Sign the on-campus housing contract

On-campus contracts open months ahead and Helaman Halls fills. Sign your housing contract early and select Helaman as your area — freshmen must live in BYU-contracted, Honor Code housing for their first two semesters.

  2. 02
    Summer

    Get your building and roommate

You'll be assigned a Helaman building and roommate over the summer. Buildings are single-sex, so men and women are housed separately.

  3. 03
    Before arrival

Buy the right sheets and a meal plan

Bring Twin XL sheets — or standard-twin sheets if you're placed in David John Hall — a fan, and sun protection. A mini fridge is already provided, and you'll choose one of the required Cannon Center meal plans.

  4. 04
    Late August

Check in at the Cannon Center

New students check in at the Helaman Halls Cannon Center to pick up an ID card and room key, then take part in New Student Orientation (late August) before fall classes begin September 2, 2026.

Where you'll live at BYU

Helaman Halls (freshman housing)

Almost every freshman lives in Helaman Halls, nine single-sex, three-story buildings on the west side of campus, all built around the Cannon Center dining hall. Rooms come furnished with a mini fridge; most floors share a bathroom with several private showers, and residents get a required Cannon Center meal plan. You contract for on-campus housing and are assigned a building and roommate — men and women live in separate buildings under BYU's Residential Living Standards.

Provo logistics, sorted

How to send a package to a BYU Helaman student

[Student Full Name]
Room [####] [Hall Name], Helaman Halls
Provo, UT 84602
Address mail with your student's name, room number, and building — for example, "Room 1234 Building 9, Helaman Halls, Provo, UT 84602." If a carrier won't accept that, use the street form: 1344 North Canyon Road, building and room number, Provo, UT 84602. Packages are logged and your student gets a notification with a five-digit pickup code; they collect it at the area central building with a photo ID.

Life runs on the Honor Code

BYU is owned by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and campus life follows the Honor Code and Residential Living Standards. In practice that means single-sex buildings, set visiting hours (visitors after 9am until midnight, and until 1:30am on Friday) with the opposite sex not in bedrooms, dress and grooming standards, and the Word of Wisdom — no alcohol, tobacco, coffee, or tea, on or off campus. It's worth talking through as a family so expectations are clear before move-in.

What's provided vs. what to bring

Helaman rooms come furnished with a bed, desk, chair, closet, and a mini fridge — so don't buy one. Microwaves aren't allowed in bedrooms (they're in the lobbies), and linens are not provided, so bring Twin XL sheets (standard twin for David John Hall). A meal plan at the Cannon Center is required, and beds can be raised on the provided legs for extra storage.
