BYU
Brigham Young University is a large, academically strong university in Provo, Utah, owned by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and organized around its Honor Code. Nearly all freshmen live in Helaman Halls — nine single-sex, three-story residence buildings on the west side of campus that share the Cannon Center dining hall. Campus sits at the base of the Wasatch Mountains at about 4,500 feet, so move-in in late August is hot, dry, high-desert weather, and the ski canyons are close by once a cold, snowy Utah winter sets in.
What to wear in Provo, month by month
This region runs from a humid late summer to a hard winter in about ten weeks. The mistake out-of-region families make is packing the whole year in August.
| Move-in (late Aug) | 60–92°F | Hot, dry, high-desert days with a big drop after sunset and intense sun at altitude. Pack light clothes, sunscreen, and a fan. |
| Sept–Oct | 45–80°F | Warm afternoons cooling quickly, with brilliant foliage up Provo Canyon. Layers and a light jacket. |
| Nov–Dec | 28–48°F | Cold settling in with the first mountain snow by finals. A real winter coat, gloves, and boots. |
| Jan–Feb | 18–40°F | A cold, snowy Wasatch Front winter, sometimes with valley inversions. A heavy parka, snow boots, and warm layers. |
| Mar–May | 35–68°F | Snowmelt easing into a green, blossoming spring, with mud and quick weather swings. Layers and a rain jacket. |
What BYU lets you bring
- A fan for the hot, dry late-August move-in — Provo runs warm and not every Helaman room is air-conditioned
- Sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat for strong high-desert sun at about 4,500 feet
- A heavy winter coat, snow boots, gloves, and a hat for a cold, snowy Wasatch winter
- Twin XL sheets (or standard-twin sheets if you're placed in David John Hall)
- Twin XL bedding (confirm your specific hall)
- UL/ETL power strip with a built-in circuit breaker — not a bare extension cord
- Damage-free wall hangings like Command strips — no nails or screws
- Low-draw LED desk and task lamps
- A fan, a reusable water bottle, and UL-listed electronics
- Open-coil / open-flame cooking: toasters, toaster ovens, air fryers, hot plates, electric grills, sandwich makers
- Candles, incense, wax warmers, and anything with an open flame
- Halogen lamps
- Extension cords without a breaker; outlet splitters and multi-plug adapters
- Space heaters and personal A/C units (unless your school provides/approves them)
- Hoverboards, e-scooters, e-bikes, and other e-mobility devices
- Weapons of any kind — including decorative — and fireworks
- Personal microwaves in the bedroom — use the shared microwaves in the building lobbies and basements
- A second mini fridge — one is already provided in every room
- Hot plates, open-coil cookers, space heaters, and other high-wattage appliances
- Candles, incense, and any open flame
- Alcohol, tobacco, coffee, and tea — prohibited on and off campus under the Honor Code and Word of Wisdom

Getting your room at BYU
- 01Winter/Spring
Sign the on-campus housing contract
On-campus contracts open months ahead and Helaman Halls fills. Sign your housing contract early and select Helaman as your area — freshmen must live in BYU-contracted, Honor Code housing for their first two semesters.
- 02Summer
Get your building and roommate
You'll be assigned a Helaman building and roommate over the summer. Buildings are single-sex, so men and women are housed separately.
- 03Before arrival
Buy the right sheets and a meal plan
Bring Twin XL sheets — or standard-twin sheets if you're placed in David John Hall — a fan, and sun protection. A mini fridge is already provided, and you'll choose one of the required Cannon Center meal plans.
- 04Late August
Check in at the Cannon Center
New students check in at the Helaman Halls Cannon Center to pick up an ID card and room key, then take part in New Student Orientation (late August) before fall classes begin September 2, 2026.
Where you'll live at BYU
Helaman Halls (freshman housing)
Almost every freshman lives in Helaman Halls, nine single-sex, three-story buildings on the west side of campus, all built around the Cannon Center dining hall. Rooms come furnished with a mini fridge; most floors share a bathroom with several private showers, and residents get a required Cannon Center meal plan. You contract for on-campus housing and are assigned a building and roommate — men and women live in separate buildings under BYU's Residential Living Standards.
A classic Helaman building named for Ira N. Hinckley, with traditional floor-style shared bathrooms and a mini fridge in every room.
Named for Stephen L. Chipman, a standard Helaman hall a short walk from the Cannon Center and the campus core.
The suite-style building, where about four students share a bathroom instead of a whole floor — and the one building with standard twin beds rather than Twin XL.
Named for Thomas N. Taylor, with floor-style bathrooms, laundry, piano rooms, and a basement kitchenette.
Named for Walter F. Stover, one of the west-side Helaman buildings surrounding the shared lawns and courts.
Named for William Budge and opened in 1959, a traditional shared-bath Helaman hall.
Named for Marriner W. Merrill, opened alongside Budge in 1959, close to the Cannon Center.
Named for Jean Fossum May and added in 1970, rounding out the older ring of Helaman buildings.
The newest Helaman building, constructed in 2010 — the most modern rooms in the complex.
